This will be, of course, my second official build thread I've posted. This time it's a thread about a new build I've been working on that abuses, of course, crit rate, from the newest shield, and combines that with shield skills and perfect defense, as well as resistance stats, to create a hybrid DPS/Tank character that does well on both ends. You should end up with around 200 defense without Gloria and I'm proud to present to you my 120 crit rate (base) and 90 crit rate (snipe) Bowgun build. There are of course, other people with bowgun/shield tank builds out there, but none of them have the crit rate I've built into this one.

    Requirements:
    Reach level 130
    Get all SP emblems

    Stats:
    255 DEX
    55 CRIT
    38 VIT

Skills highlighted in RED are required for the build, and as such, the prerequisite skills are also required.

    Shot Skills: (61 sp)
    Power Shot - 5
    Moeba Shot - 5
    Paralysis Shot - 5
    Smoke Dust - 1
    Bullseye - 5
    Snipe - 10
    Shot Mastery - 10
    Long Range - 10
    Quick Draw - 10

    Magic Skills: (22 sp)
    Magic: Arrows - 5
    Magic: Javelin - 5
    Magic: Lances - 5

    Magic: Impact - 7

    Survival Skills: (15 sp)
    Safe Rest - 5

    HP Boost - 10

    Shield Skills: (20 sp)
    Protection - 10
    Aegis - 10

    Shield Mastery - 5
    Shield Bash - 1

    Battle Skills: (20 sp)
    Attack UP - 5
    Whack - 5

    Critical UP - 10

    Knight Skills: (20 sp)
    Assault Attack - 5
    Parry - 5

    Perfect Defense - 10

    Blade Skills: (20 sp)
    Sword Mastery - 5
    Quick Slash - 5

    War Cry - 10

    Total: 186/186 SP
Why Crit rate? Critical Hits can NOT miss. They will never fail to hit their target, unlike non critical hits, outside of the target evading. Bosses with high dodge rates, like those on gem runs will be hit anyway, this helps all of your basic shot skills generate aggro no matter what. In addition to this, Critical Hits will hit higher of course, which means more damage for you.

    Gears:
Gears are INCREDIBLY important for this build. Without specific gears, you will not reach the crit rate recommended. Read this section carefully. Recommended Crystas are highlighted and listed first within parenthesis.

    Weapon:
    2nd Anniv Bowgun (
    Imitator/Ganglef)
    Atk +7%
    Critical Damage +13
    Critical Rate +13
    Critical Rate +13%
Natural HP Regen -7% Natural MP Regen -7

    Sub weapon (Shield)
Vulcan Shield (Drop from Ifrid boss)
    Guard Rate +35%
    Guard Power +10%
    Attack Speed +250
    Accuracy +6
    Critical Rate +12

    Armor:
Any armor will work as long as you can add these stats to it I currently am using:
    Adventurer's Garb (
    Iconos/Ifrid)
    Critical Damage +7%
    Critical Damage +13
    Critical Rate +13
    Critical Rate +13%
    Matk-7% Accuracy -7

    Additional Gear:

Gothic Hat (NPC) - (Warmonger/Twilight Dragon)
    Critical Rate +15

    Special Gear:
    Dexterity Talisman III - (
    Bexiz/Aranea)
    DEX +6
    Max MP +400
Now, for the combos section, there are a LOT of possibilities. The skill spread on this build is rather large, which makes combos a lot of fun to play with. The ones I've created so far are as follows (Feel free to suggest new combos or correct any of these if they're incorrect)

Combo 1: Used for aggro generation and semi dps:
    MP COST: 100/Aggro Generation: 1500
Perfect Defense > Smoke Dust (save) > War Cry (cons) > Snipe (smite) > Paralysis Shot (cons)
This combo abuses perfect defense as a combo starter, you can activate perfect defense to heal 10% of max hp when an enemy attack hits you, then lead straight into a fast combo that generates a considerable amount of aggro.

Combo 2: Used for, again, aggro generation and semi dps, but long ranged this time:
    MP COST: 100/Aggro Generation: 1800
Moeba Shot > Smoke Dust (save) > War Cry (cons) > Javelin (swift) > Impact (cons) > Snipe (smite) > Paralysis Shot (cons)

Combo 3: Used for maximum, fastest DPS, long ranged
    MP COST: 400/Aggro Generation: 400
Impact > Snipe (smite) > Perfect Defense (cons).

    *NOTE*
Make sure to get your armor, shield, and additional gear refined to at least +C this is EXTREMELY important, since +C Refinement is equal to +12% resistance to magic and physical damage. This means with shield, armor, and additional refined to C, you have 36% resistance already without protection and Aegis. So make sure to get them refined.
For all you nerds out there, here's the obligatory crit rate calculation I used for this build:
    Base crit rate = 25
Crit rate added to base from crit stat:
    55 crit stat / 3.4 = ~16
    16+25 = 41
    13% of 41 = ~5 (we always round down)
This means that each 13% stat adds +5 crit rate.
This gives us a total of 51 crit rate from base + CRIT stat + 13% stats on weapon and armor.
    51 + 21 from gothic hat and warmonger = 72
    72 + 5 from Bexiz and +5 from critical UP skill = 82
    82 + 12 from Vulcan Shield = 95
    94 + 26 (+13 crit stats on armor and weapon) = 120 Crit Rate
Since Snipe's crit rate on bowgun is calculated with the -25% critical rate on it, this means that with a critical rate of 120 base, Snipe has a crit rate of 90.
This is calculated like this: Snipe has -25% on it's crit rate, this means that it has a total of 75% crit rate, or 0.75. If we multiply 120 by 0.75 we get 90.

And there you have it. 120 Base Crit rate, 90 crit rate on snipe, around 6,000 hp when capped, 40% or higher resistance stats with protection/aegis and dps as well to add onto that. This idea came to me when looking at the newest items that were introduced with the Ifrid boss, particularly the Vulcan shield drop, with it's critical rate bonus of +12, which is the highest of any sub weapon in Toram Online as of now. Having that instead of a heavy knife let me drop a lot of the CRIT stat that was required before to make this build, and made 120 crit rate obtainable while still having VIT as a third stat. I took some inspiration from @mayam, @Gummy101, @Tiggy and their Bowgun/Shield ideas and thoughts and made my own build out of them. Thanks everyone.

Cool build, and yeah, it's easy to think about a sword or bowgun tank with that shield - but harder to do all the planning! Nice.

Some typos. I see you play the game more than you worry about stat formulas =P Weapons use Natural MP Regen-7, not -7%, and armor uses Accuracy-7, not -7%. (Those percents don't exist.)

Instead of Dexterity Talisman III, have you considered Dark Fighter Bangle? I don't see any aggro investment aside from combos with high cost skills. I guess I don't know enough about tanking. But it seems worthwhile to consider. Could be helpful for certain groups.

:') I love typos don't you? And with Aggro generation from all of the shot skills + war cry, there will be a ton of Aggro being created, that's why it will draw Aggro from other builds, and why snipe is notorious for stealing it from some tanks. Fixed stats. Dark fighter bangle is a possibility though, but you don't (Always) need aggro% to hold Aggro.

I am confused, why a sniper needs magic skills and such? Is that necessary? o_O

Impact halves the mp cost of the skill used after it, in our case, snipe. Making it cost 2mp instead of 4. So yes, you need those skills.

You only need 1100 aspd. After that it's all motion speed, just use Giga speed potions.

Definitely not a SAO name :)
Great work! The build looks great and very comprehensive. Even for someone has barely scratched the surface about the game's meta can already have the gist of the build. One question though, Would you recommend this build to newbies(like me) that just started? I also want to know if how would this keep up for someone who is planning to solo bosses (90-95% of the time, since my free time drastically changes every now and then.) I am currently at my level 50s and I am planning to follow this build since I barely spent any skill points on my character yet.

    Cheers!

Pdef is a great skill that really enables boss soloing, BUT it is only available from level 125. Still a ranged attacker hiding behind sneak attack can solo well providing you have friends/guildmates with good tank mercs.

On a side note, a full dex/rest vit char with bg makes a good personal tank merc, providing you gear it with 1.1k+ aspd
