Crit tank

    I'm a high block tank nearing level cap. My stats are 255 Dex, 100 Vit, 50+ Str.

    Like most sword tanks, I'm relying on the Toy Hammer to tank hard+ bosses, which I otherwise couldn't hit reliably, despite max Dex. This works, but my damage is essentially nil, and I feel like most of my stat points are wasted.

    I've been wondering if dumping my Dex points into Crit would be an overall improvement. My understanding is that this would give me a 100% crit rate (less crit resistance, of course), freeing me from using the Toy Hammer. My ATK would be rubbish, but overall my applied damage would still be higher while tanking.

    Does anyone have any thoughts on this approach? Has anyone tried it?

    Sad that no one has replied to this...probably no one here has tried it or someone has and it's just rubbish :D but this is the exact build I'm trying to do because I don't want to use Toy Hammer (even though I spent hours farming it....1dmg is too depressing to look at). There's a knuck called Twin Eagles that has 100 crit rate without penalties. I don't want to use it for my tank though because I already have a brawler and I want some sword-swinging action :D

    it will definitely improved your tanking coz having full crt via stats will give you the option to equip any sword when you felt necessary. like 1H with additional crt more for boss with high flee like gwaimol/ornlarf types, 1H with additonal ampr, additonal +aggro, additional HP/MP, defensive/offensive stats, etc. and it will raise you atk/tap dmg too as a bonus. And in any MMO newer boss means newer gears with more stronger stats offensive/defensive wise. dps fully grasp that idea in any game that they have to upgrade to compensate to newer boss high HP/def/etc. your idea will allows your tank to utilize all the possible 1H weapon theyve added/ will add in the future that will give you more flexibility on any boss, any difficulty, any party.
    as a tank you shouldn't consider this for offensive purpose. because in this game DMG = COMBOS and the more you as a tank desire dmg, the more you will throw that combo that i will assume physical that may affect or compete the proration for a more dedicated dps. the more you will spend your SP to offensive skills too that can be use on skills that can increase your or your party's survive ability for a more nicer, stable, toramgasm grinds. :eek:

    I'm not considering going offensive though. I'm not even getting any dps skill. I just don't like 1dmg and getting tied to one weapon.

    yeah freedom and choice is always better. with full crt stats you can free all gears + avatars slots. you can become anything just by switching them with the same stats you desire, the possibility is endless. Thats the reason why my main is a tank and i never got bored.

    FYI if you put 255 points into CRIT personal stat, that will give you 75% crit. On top of your natural 25% base crit, that's 100% so your attacks will never miss (unless evaded). Having this stat distribution would allow you to use any (crit-less) weapon or gear that would please you. Happy exploring with this! :rolleyes:

    Personally I have a regular tank (main stat VIT), a dps tank (main stat DEX) and an ailment resist tank (main stat MTL).

    The damage from the DPS tank is extremely lacklustre in this day and age of Finale, CF and Tenryu (but the extra accuracy from DEX is very nice for a tank merc). And even if you have a TON of hp, you can still be interrupted to heck as a normal tank (and then subsequently kicked out of the battle completely). My clear favorite now is the MTL tank just for ease of play (and anti-knockback). :D

    100% ailments resists a bit too OP though. They really should distinguish between ailment (i.e. burn, poison, freeze) and interrupt (flinch, stun, knockback) to level the tank playing field somewhat... o_O

    recovery skill thats 0 mp cost or a support can solve ailment problems infact we can even use most skills (pdef/provoke/recovery/etc) even ailment is inflicted. most ailment is more annoying for DPS but for tank its manageable imho.
    But i cant deny the usefulness on event bosses that can knock you out of the arena. because MTL hype train only started on Gespenst2, Titeres, etc. But hey theres many ways to prevent that too and all bosses are not like that. You can dodge it, interrupt if possible, parry with pdef if possible. And if you will fight boss like 5-10x and got knocked out many times, it will be just a question how quickly you can adjust your playstyle, combo, your approach anticipating that atk. because of all the roles, Tanks are the ones who grasp patterns quickly. infact, were learning it automatically and unconsciously. i always believed having a tank can make you a better DPS player. and i dunno about others but when tyrant tumbled me, it serves as a sign that the next skill is his heal so i need to interrupt immediately when i get up or when Tapir put me to sleep, he will heal that can be a signal to my members that they need to interrupt him to prevent healing.
    Anyways time can only tell what will endup in the future. But in all games out there whats universal is boss are made to do 1 purpose. To become tougher and wipe its players out by delivering damage. and as it progresses those damage will be greater by quantity, quality, may came from any form we can never think of.
    this is just my own opinions based on my experiences from the MMOS i knew.
    by no means im under estimating the build. infact im considering MTL as for my tank's 3rd stats altho im also anticipating more ailment resistant stats gears/weaps be dropping soon that will make it also one of my options when dev decided to throw a boss that uses annoying ailments thats even worst than p.avatar. FLEXIBILTY IS REEL MATE ;)

    Hi Jbatz and, my friend Lenwok nwn/
    Finally, depends if you like your tank and your build. The problem is that many people see videos about tanks in youtube and only copy this. A tank isnt only copy the build and play, if not that you should understand all about the patterns of each boss and what you should do.
    My main tank is BS VIT and im happy nwn
