While you make your way to Lv70 get all the elemental staves, craft yourself an Oracle Robe or Outerworld Armor at the NPC blacksmith, get the Matk 4%, Stability 8% version of Curled Horns, you can find it non-slotted for a cheap price at consignment board. Go farm a Philosopher's Ring and read a lot of the mage guides here in forum so you get the idea of the skills and how to use them in combos for a better performance. Only assign stat points on INT. After Lv70 you should use your book of oblivion and build your mage with the least mistakes possible. By that level you'll be strong enough to farm an Empress Soul (Magic Device) from Ancient Empress boss. Use it to farm Nightmare Crystal from Nightmare Roars. Every stack can be traded for 300k exp to Lefina. That's how you'll level up your mage the fastest and make some $ if you sell the stacks so you can buy the good gears that most mage guides recommend.

Do your main quest then reset your skills once you got level 70

There are some fun builds on this forum so I suggest checking them out, but remember some are complicated and wont be able to be made until you hit lvl 100 or so

Gl^^ great job on asking questions hehe, a great player does not simply become great without asking questions ^^

OK so I noticed that people have bigger magic walls than me how does that work? Being a mage is a first for me and I must admit it's pretty fun.

I would personally aim for lvl 70 first and get the "Magic Storm" Skill, you can suck in mobs with a bigger range than wall ^^

Aoe range depends on the weapon
MD = Bigger Aoe but less damage
Staff = Smaller Aoe but more damage

    MD = Magic Device

STAFF: Powerful magic weapon, narrow AOE of spells.
MAGIC DEVICE: Weaker magic weapon, wider AOE of spells.

Use Staff against bosses and Magic Device when farming small mobs.

there are many different variants of "classes" each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
depending on what you want to be, certain equipment can be stronger or weaker, just because something has higher atk or more stats doesn't mean it's better than what you had before. as your level gets higher, equipment is no longer a direct upgrade to the previous one on the list.

don't just blindly follow the majority, try to understand the system and make your very own creation =(^.^)=
reading the guides is helpful, but most of them are not very beginner friendly and some of the more popular and commonly used builds are just a one-trick-pony :p

here are the basics to get you started:
    - staff weapons have faster MP charge and get a damage bonus on magic skills
    - magic devices (MD) have faster attack speed and get an effect bonus on magic skills (size/number, chance to inflict status ailments)
    - staffs can equip sub-weapons, so the builds are very diverse depending on the choice of weapons and skills
    - MDs are very similar to knuckles, they also have a +25% chance to cause status ailments with martial skills (this is the same effect as equiping knuckles as sub-weapon, but without drawbacks. knuckle as sub-weapon reduces magic attack by -15%)

so, with a MD you will favor utility and effect over damage and you have a good balance of physical and magical power.
with a staff you will favor magic damage and you can gain additional powers through sub-wepaons.
in general there are 2 types of staffs: classic magical staffs and maces.
maces have physical stats in adition to magic stats on them, usually they boost attack and defense.

and since you were originally a swordsman, there is another option for you ;)
the "Spellblade" also known as Magic Swordsman =(^.^)=
you can equip MDs as sub-weapon and combine magic with any other weapon type.
but MDs as sub-weapon will decrease your atk by -15% and their stats will have no effect. (just like knuckle sub and sword sub)
in exchange you will get all of the MDs bonus effects to magic skills.
i have a guide about it here: http://toramonline.com/index.php?threads/the-magic-swordsman-school.16422/
i will update it soon to make it better ;)
but be warned! Magic Swordsman are very complex, like dual wielders, and they don't start as strong as other classes.
if you are new to the game, i recommend you to go for a staff or MD magician :)
