Magic Devices?

im a noob.

so questions:
- whats the diff between a magic device and staff?
- which is better?
- where do i find magic devices?

A magic device is a weapon that can be used mainly for mass farming due to its wider range of aoe attacks. Staffs are used mainly for fighting single mobs like bosses.

It depends.

You can craft them from blacksmith or you can farm for them as drops from mobs like ancient empress and jade raptor.

 

Staff has higher base attack damage.
Magic device has wider area of effect radius.

Both are good.
Staff will be used primarily for boss hunting.
Whereas, magic device will be used for farming normal mobs.

There's a few monsters/bosses that drop them.
Also, can be crafted.

That is the general rule, but don't limit yourself to it if you find exceptions or ways to make one or the other work.

For example, I've seen support characters who use Magic Devices in boss battles in order to benefit from the wider range. The faster attack speed and ranged auto attacks allows them to recover MP faster from a distance without having to spend points on power wave. They also use the wider range to push away bosses with Magic Wall when the tank loses aggro or to interrupt special attacks that require the boss to be within a certain distance to their target.

They both have pros and cons. It all just depends on the situation and your build or what you're trying to build.

 

i see, youre right. however since i usually dont party much, i think ill have to stick to staffs for bosses

 

staffs have 50% more power on magic skills.
magic devices have double sized area spells, more hits on projectile spells and higher chance to inflict status ailments.
Magic Impact is the only exception, it has 250% more power with devices and 25% higher chance to tumble with staff (but devices still have double size).
staffs have a faster charge time for MP charge and longer range with Power Wave, but devices have higher attack range by default and faster attack speed. also they gain more attack power from power wave.

the stats are also different. both gain the same stats from INT, but devices get more atk and they gain atk from AGI which also raises attack speed and dodge.

devices are 2h weapons, so you can't use secondary weapons, but they get a 25% higher chance to cause status effects with martial skills. (so it's like having knuckles as sub-weapon but without the penalty on magic attack).
staffs are 1h weapons, so you can use daggers, shields, knuckles or arrows as sub-weapon.

Edit:
fun fact: although staff are designed to be more powerful, devices have the strongest magic arrows.
staffs get 50% more power, but devices get 4 extra hits which is like 66% more power.
