As a magic based character, you would want a physical based buddy so that your proration would be complimentary and beneficial to each other. You may choose any weapon except Staff and Magical Device cos they are both magic based.

2H/ Physical Attack/ not Gentle or Timid
1H/ Physical Attack or Accurate/ not Gentle or Timid
Knuckles/ Dodge/ not Gentle or Timid
    Bow/ Accurate/ Timid, not Gentle
    Bowgun/ Accurate/ Timid, not Gentle
*Gentle-natured pets can't auto attack or perform offensive skills.
*Bow and BG are good for Timid nature cos those weapons are for long-range, they are not affected by the drawback of Timid nature that keeps pets 8m away from target, making short-range weapons unable to auto attack.
*This is just my preference. Other natures work too. Theres a thread about pet system that presents pet natures in a chart.

The strongest physical based pet skill is Raging Blow. Its the one at the top left corner of their skill window. You will start with Heavy Blow and pray to RNGsus that your pet learns either Crit Up or HP Up for 2nd skill and then Raging Blow for its 3rd skill.

Good luck and happy pet rearing!! :):):)
