I don't recommend doing this, but you can troll physical attackers to try and get the attacker rank.

In my experience playing a physical and magical mage, i.e brawl mage and sword mage, you can force the magic proration upwards and physical proration downwards, leading to increased magical damage dealt to monster, and minimal physical damage dealt to the said monster in the whole party.

My full int, knux mage full int with md sub did this: Full int = negligible physical attack, same matk as a staff user

Smash > shell break (save) > Impact (smite) > Bash (swift)
with a sword, u will get this:
Hard hit/astute > Shell Break (save) > Impact (smite) > Trigger Slash (swift)

I've got flinch, stun and tumble to lock the monster in place in the 3 physical, 1 magical combo. I spam incessantly without even bothering to get in a few normal hits. With maxed shell break and quick draw and a 1500 mp pool. As you spam. You'll see the damage of impact rising steadily till it reaches maxed proration. The result is me almost outdpsing a staff fu (spamming), and claimed attacker against a sword fu and a two-hander who tried to prorate in vain.

It's an underhanded way to rob the rank away from the real dpsers and will most likely drag out the fight due to minimizing the damage potential of physical dpsers. It isn't fair to them.

So just stick to what we hybrid mages do best for now, breaking and supporting the party. Leave the attacker rank to the dpsers. Thus, I opted for javelin (swift) instead of bash/ trigger slash to balance out the magic: physical skills per combo.

Toram isn't simply a dps fest, though the current meta dictates that. the game is deeper, and more complex than "I got attacker HA!"

Magic Skills also have higher attack multipliers than Physical Skills and that is why they can be strong even without a Weapon Bonus.

Let's learn some magic then!

In other games, magic power and magic defense usually come as seperate stats like Intellect and Mind. In Toram you get it all with a single stat: Intelligence.
The secondary stat for magic is Dexterity which increases casting speed. Since almost all classes already use DEX as source of Accuracy and/or Attack, all you need is INT and you can effectively use magic too.
One-Handed Weapon users can also equip a Magic Device as Sub Weapon to gain it's Weapon Bonus for Magic Skills, but that power comes at a price.
Physical attack power is lowered by -15%, also the stats, crysta and Refinement of the Magic Device will not be used, so it all depends on your Main Weapon.
But even without a Magic Device you can make good use of Magic.

Note:
- this guide is only about Swords and Magic, other weapons are not included
- Dual Swords are not included, since their special nature doesn't leave room for magic
- Priest Skills are not included because they are a different category

The Magic Swordsman

A Magic Swordsman uses Swords and Magic, but there are many possibilities how to combine those two.
I have simplified it to 3 different types, which will all be explained here.

The Basics:

The required stats for Swords are STR and DEX, so we just need to add INT for Magic.
The priority of each stat depends on the type of Magic Swordsman.
Hard Hit and Sword Mastery are the basic skills for Swords. Magic Arrows and MP Charge are the basic skills for Magic.
Quick Slash raises Attack Speed and War Cry raises all party members Attack for a short time. It's 300MP cost and quick activation make it very useful for combos with the Save tag.
Chain Cast reduces the Cast Time of Magic whenever you activate Magic Arrows and Power Wave extends the range of your normal attacks to 10m. Damage will be halved when Power Wave is active, but it allows you to attack from far away and recover MP.
From there on, each type will learn different skills.
Survival Skills are equally important for all types, and I don't think they need to be explained here.

Magic Arrows is the strongest Lv1 Skill. It has 12m range and a 6x attack multiplier, which is 50% more than other Lv1 Skills.
MP Charge makes you immobile for a few seconds but quickly recovers MP. Since you are vulnerable while using it, you cannot always use it in battle, so it does not replace the need for other methods of MP Recovery.

Defensive Type - Runic Knight:

(Note: There is no Skill that can mimic Celes' Runic Ability, this is just cosplay )

The Runic Knight uses 2h Swords, so STR has priority over DEX. By wearing Heavy Armor you can take advantage of Magic Defence from INT.
Blade Skills are strong with 2h Swords, they are your main attacks. Magic Skills are the secondary weapon and cover the need for long range attacks.
Your Sword is your main source of power, so Swords that increase Critical Hit Rate are good, but those that raise MaxHP are also good as back-up weapons.
Armors should be choosen for HP, Resistance and/or Guard stats. Rings and Add. Gear can provide MP and magic powers, especially Magic Defence.

Astute is an attack that raises Critical Hit Rate by 50 for a short time.
Trigger Slash is a Fire Element Attack which raises Attack MP Recovery until the next Skill is used. That Skill will also be executed with increased Motion Speed.
Rampage is a Buff Skill with a high cost, but it greatly enhances the power of your next 10 normal attacks and executes 3 very strong attacks after that. It's a "high risk - high reward" skill, so use it carefully.
Magic Javelin has less power than Magic Arrows but activates instantly and has a 10% chance to inflict a Status Ailment.
Magic Lances has the longest range of all Magic and can inflict Stop on the target.
Magic Impact is a fast and very useful Magic: It hits all enemies near you and has a 75% chance to inflict Tumble. It also halves the cost of the next Skill you use, which is helpful for Rampage.

Balanced Type - Enchanter:

The Enchanter uses 1h Swords and a Magic Device. Since it is perfectly balanced between Sword and Magic Skills, all three stats are equally important.
Consequently, your attack growth will be lower, so Buffs and Status Ailments are your main attacks.
The skills for this type are exactly the same as for the Runic Knight, but this time their effects will be much different.
Certain 1h Swords have have physical and magical stats, which are stronger than other swords.
Other Equipment should be chosen to balance physical and magic al stats equally, especially HP and MP.

Magic Arrows will gain 2 additional hits.
MP Charge will be much faster, making it easier to use in battle. This is very helpful for Rampage.
Power Wave will no longer halve damage, but instead increase it by 20%.
Hard Hit does less damage but has 100% chance to Flinch, making it a reliable interception skill.
Astute raises Critical Hit Rate only by 25, but also costs only 100MP without loosing power.
Trigger Slash gets very high accuracy.
Rampage is mostly the same, but with the 1h Sword's faster attack speed it is much easier to pull off.
Magic Javelin will have a 60% chance to inflict a Status Ailment.
Magic Lances will gain 1 additional hit.
Magic Impact has 2m more range and it's attack multiplier is increased by 1x.

Offensive Type - Spellblade

The Spellblade also uses 1h Swords and a Magic Device, but has a different selection of skills. To make best use of it's Magic, this class favours DEX over STR, resulting in higher Magic Attack and Casting Speed. Magic Swords are better than others here, too. Other Equipment should also be chosen for it's magical stats.

Sonic Blade is a fast skill with unlimited range. It deals a guaranteed Critical Hit and attacks everything between you and the target. If you use it a second time within 5 seconds, it will become Super Sonic Blade which deals double damage with double reach.
The other physical Skills are Halberd Skills, not Blade Skills:
Flash Stab is a fast attack, stronger than Hard Hit and without extra effects.
Deadly Spear takes a second to activate but has increased Critical Hit Rate and partially ignores the target's Defence.
Strike Stab deals 3 strong hits. It has a reduced Critical Hit Rate, but is very powerful.
Quick Aura takes 10% of your HP to greatly increase your Attack Speed for a while. Also it doesn't cost MP, so it's useful for fast MP Recovery.
Magic Wall draws a large circle on the ground which can hit up to 10 times and pushes monsters away with the Knock Back effect.
Magic Blast is a powerful Explosion Magic. It has the widest reach of all Magic and a 10% chance to inflict a status ailment. It has a long cast time, but with Chain Cast and this type's high Casting Speed it's easy to use.
Magic Storm is the strongest Magic. It generates a huge Tornado which absorbs nearby monsters. (The Magic Device Weapon Bonus gives this skill a 4m radius, greatly increasing the success rate of trapping monsters inside, even the big ones.)

Thank you for the in depth guide (I've just started so this is a great help ^^) however i' m unsure about the number of skill points I should attribute to each skill... are you going to do an update on this?

Also, even though it's early days, I'm not sure on the use of magic arrow... is it really necessary? Will it be useful later on? And I've read everywhere the MP charge is not useful during odd battles... is this true?

you can only use as much skill points as you currently have available, so every skill has to start at lv1
attack skills should always be raised to lv10, since you always pay the full cost you also want to have their full effect.
passive skills don't consume your mana, so you can raise them as you need to.

it is the most cost efficient magic attack, the strongest 1mp skill and it activates Chain Cast.

you cannot move while charging and like every charged or casted skill it may fail when you take damage.

continue with both =(^.^)=
even if matk gets higher than atk, it's fine that way.

i finally got my hands on my first ice weapon (the bowgun) and it is most effective with balanced stats

what skills do you have?
(combining long range magic with short range skills is difficult, so i usually make 1 ranged and 1 melee combo)

well... this is what i have now:
astute - hard hit (cons) - trigger (cons)
it's cheap and buffs mp recovery

lances - arrows (cons) - javelin (cons)
3mp long range with good damage and ailments

and this is what i had on previous characters
astute - spiral air (smite) - javelin/trigger (cons)
sonic blade - impact (cons)
impact - tempest (smite) - javelin (cons)

since you split up your points on everything, i guess you want to make one of those difficult-to-use double smite combos...
impact - storm (smite) - spiral air (save) - astute (cons) - tempest (smite) - javelin/trigger (cons) ?

Thanks for the tips! It seems evrything is going smoothly. Im still experimenting on other combos since i really like 1mp ~ 2mp combos.
Btw is it better if my ATK and MATK are equal?
What xtals and equips should i go for?

magic swords, armor with magic stats, add gear with whatever you don't get from the other equips.

Hi im going to be using H1 i want to use Icebrand Glacier. So I was wondering about the int (atk +1) and Str (atk -1) does this effect the physical damage dealt? And if so should I go full int for high Matk and Atk or do a 50/50 Int/Dex?

im currently create a Sword Mage character with Glacier sword ...

lv 92 atm
status : INT - 186 Dex - 75

my current sta :
ATK : 701 (got damage reduce coz using MD as sub)
MTK : 803
(not using any crysta)

my biggest damage still "Magic Impact" like 14K damage ;-;

still so weak atm..,
