It has been a while since I have played as a dw, but for whatever reason I felt like playing as one again and was wondering how much I actually need decoy. Decoy is really nice, but I usually like to make my builds without it if I don't have to. Is it a bad idea to not get decoy?

not reall. Even I don't have decoiiii on my DW. The cons is you will rarely spam the dps combo but the good news is you produce proration. Just abuse shukuchi like katana players do sometimes, doing the attack then step back a little bit then attack again method.

The thing with melee using decoy is that a lot of them become too dependent on it. Unfortunately for dw spamming rate becomes lower. At least for dw they got good ampr and doesn't really have much problem with it. Forced to do proration but it isn't really a problem since that's an absolute win for the team. The only good thing I see about dw decoy builds is they can choose when to or not to use it depending on the enemy.

Actually yeah it's bad idea if u ask me ( unless ur one of those close minded haters). Take decoy it's very handy depending on situations.
Like finstern, kuzto, eroded pilz, Sapphire roga and gravicep to name few new bosses.

Well as for myself, decoy on dw aint a must, but aint gonna hurt to take as well, lol. So far I only use em on venena... (now I feel I wasted 10 sp, rip.).

Doesnt matter if ur gonna take decoy or nah. Ur just slightly has lower spam rate on stationed bosses like venena, that's all. Tho I could'a say, decoy r kinda... addictive, lol.

If you want to use the spare sp for something else, sure. But if you don't have a clear idea on what you use them for, get it.

It's like a tank without p. Def. Some rely heavily on it, others don't use it much due to another alternative setup. At the end of he day it's really a good skill by itself.

My tank only have a lvl 1 p.def which is unusual for tanks. I don't take the resistance passive from shield tree, and I've no shukuchi. But in exchange I could get skills like spirited dance, power wave, elegant pose and nature's wonder, there's also sacrifice, which turns out to be really useful on p. Avatar's last phase.

If you go decoyless, I'd say create a dw build that doesn't rely on spamming to deal comparable damage, something like an Unsheathe build with enchant sword and storm reaper, go with Str>Dex. Use gsw and utilize the invincibility skills.

I play dw just fine without decoy.
I put both beserk and ramage in 1 combo and can get full mp revcovery from ramage + 4 impact>sc combo before the beserk from the combo runs out.

    Good Question...
    Pros
    - Another Source of AMPR
    - Good for stationary bosses
    - Useful asf in parties especially when you have a decent tank

    Cons
    - SP cost but with how CAP is at this point in the game if you want it to get it, get it.
    - Somewhat limited if your build revolves relying on this skill to maintain MP
    - Low ASPD/AMPR = Low Reward

I'm still rocking my DW's without decoy and rampage/berserk and it's still solid asf for an ideal Old School AMPR build coughshoutouttoamprdwswhereuat.
Note this build is still not on top of current up to date gears.
If you already have a good understanding on how AAC works along with the utility of trigger slash/shukuchi/shadowstep decoy is just a bonus skill if you have the SP for it.

    Want it? Get it
    Necessary not at all

Auto Attack Cancelation, pretty much made the long animation auto attack can be canceled while the AMPR and damage already registered being kept registered.
In short, how to trigger ampr while making the animation short

Well yes but actually no lol
less u meant trigger ampr as in the animation is shortened/canceled but u still get the ampr gained from the attack
    That aside

You don't need trigger-slash to perform an Auto Attack Cancelation/AAC
Spin Slash is cancelable on its own due to DW's unique attack animation being a closed set of 3/4 hits.
Spin Slash replicates that whether its a bug or a mechanic it allows a cancel.
Rampage follows the same thing as SpinSlash though at higher aspd it is much more noticeable todo.
    Phantom Slash is also cancelable~

Depends on your playstyle and depends on which boss you're fighting against, Decoy might and might not be useful. I never used Decoy for my DW. Eventhough I realized that it might be useful for some cases, I'm not interested in learning Decoy as a DW.

Instead of having Decoy, it's important to just use Auto Attacks often, not just for MP, but also for Proration. If the AMPR amount from your Auto Attaks isn't enough, you can make use of DWs Shadow Step effect for AMPR boost.

Sukuchi as AAC? Also, I dont understand how AAC can be beneficial on apmr, isnt it wasting ampr since u use skill to cancel? Can u somehow enlighten me, im still somewhat new to this game

Normally there's a delay after u do a norm atk. AAC cancels that delay without cancellin the norm atk itself, including the ampr. Thus, faster than normal method. Better check the vids and try it urself, its magical.

Tho yeah, utilizing AAC needs practice.
