Best Pet

So since we can add pets freely now while in a pt, I was thinking to get a tank pet. So any recommendations what pet traits I should get and what pet to get if it makes any difference

 

the species decides the appearance, element and attack patterns.

nature affects stat boni and behaviour in battle.

type affects base stats, weapon affects stat growth, stability and attack range.

for a tank, neutral is the best element, since it has no weaknesses.
weapon could be any, but close range weapons may live longer, because the damage taken decreases as the pet is closer and increases as it gets farther away from the attacker.
ranged weapons have the advantage of avoiding close range AoEs, but some natures always aim to attack at max distance, so the pet might be more running than fighting and not generate enough aggro.
Magic Defense and Physical Defense are the best defensive types. alternately you can use Allrounder or it's upgrade: Genius.
nature is debatable and situation dependant. generally, Devoted is the best nature, because it gets a 30% resistance bonus. this can be substituted by Sturdy, which gets 15% resistance and 15%atk/matk.
Sly is the nature that avoids all AoEs (except Bowling) and is immune to Floor (spikes), which usually kill pets.

the skill Rage Attack can be either physical or magical, depending on which stat is higher.
for a tank-optimized pet, critical damage is irrelevant so you want it to be magical.
Knuckle, MD and Staff are the weapon of choice here.
with the new party system, First Aid is a must if you want your pet to stay alive when you are dead.
if it has the Magic Defense type, it can heal itself with Absorb HP, otherwise HP Boost can improve it's survival capabilities.
