For dps bg I liked using str>dex a7cd7cd16 on weapon and s7cd7cd16 on arm with meikyo for crit rate, add gear gave crit to get close to 100 crit rate.

bowguns don't get atk from STR, but the atk gain from DEX is higher than bows.
bowguns are the only weapon to reach their full attack power from just 1 stat.
skill effects (for shot skills) are vastly different. bowguns get increased power and shorter charge time on everything, but the chance to inflict ailments is reduced to 10%.
the atk and stability of arrows is halved for bowguns, but they can equip all other sub weapons.
using sub weapon skills like dagger, magic or martial skills compensates the lack of ailments from shot skills.

Bowgun is not really as good as a bow and arrow if compared as is.

For damage, bow wins in power whereas bowgun wins in speed.

The ailments don't really help much on a bowgun as they get a penalty on all shot skills.

TBH, if you have a bowgun, you'd only be using it to do ranged dps whereas your sub would be your utility. Bowgun dps isn't as high as bow due to the sensical no growth from STR (they still get crit damage).

I like bowgun if only because I can use it with magic device to make an Mana regenerator sorta build amongst having 2 good nukes.

    To add:
    • Bowgun as lower stability (and arrow stability is halved when equipped on bow).
    • Also, Snipe with bowgun has a 75% crit rate reduction (because it was considered too OP many moons ago) so you need effectively 140 crit for Snipe skill to be 100% crit when using bowgun.
    • Bowgun also has lower range than bow.
I think its rather unfair that the snipe skill tree better favors bow than bg, but you can explore other methods of DPS via subweapons and other skill trees. I think Chariot (martial lvl 4 skill) is the next most viable option for DPS

Just to note, crit rate reduction on snipe is 75 - (5*skill level) with bows having an additional +25%

I use a BG Dagger build that uses high evasion and GSW

I let my CF charge while i throw out a slurry of max motion speed gatlings.

I've seen my gatling hit for about 40k per. Can be higher I think if i stability wasn't so bad. Going to refine my cone horn to B and get marchitar for stability.

But yeah, overall, Bow is better for damage.

So why is there all this bg helper dmg on all these skills if bow has a clear advantage? Why not just give the CC to bg?

Let me elaborate on the matter.
Bowgun's Snipe is OP, especially if it is combined with Cone Horn III. Higher than Bow's CF in the same duration used by Bow's CF (needs at least 3 Snipes to get 1 Bow's CF with 3 charge).
You use Bowgun differently. You don't spam CF, you spam Snipe. Let the Bowgun's CF charges to 4 or 5. Meanwhile, spam Snipe. Bowgun has quite the advantage here, given your AMPR can handle it.
    That's all :)

Thanks for explaining the other side of the coin. My assumption was that snipe is really about getting off the armor break (reliably) as opposed to it's dmg or dmg component. I don't use bg for dps at the moment, but had to rethink that recently and especially with some of the options that are around.
