You have storage space at generalstore:sololo in sofya. I have more space because i bought with orbs but you should have storage A with 35-45 open slots.

When you process items you get material points; the points can be used to make equipment, consumables, and put stats on equipment.

The amount of material points you have can be seen under Menu>Character>Stats>Production

Check the consignment board and try to get an idea on prices, also check the smith and synth crafting menu I find materials that are required to craft an item tend to be worth more then ones people turn into points. It may take a while to get the hang of but eventually by checking prices and selling items you'll learn what items to sell, what to turn to points, what to discard, and what to put in storage. Also something to keep in mind certain non tradeable items can be sold at the general store instead of turning it to points or discarding it.

If items are rare or not, you will learn over time. I have a couple tips though....
Avoid discarding. Not because the item is useful, but because you are most likely short on spina, therefore you could use every single spina possible. If you can, try going back to town every once in a while to just sell everything to Sololo.
Check prices on board, they are far from accurate, but they if you look at the mean of the unit rate then you will get a general idea.
If it's just like a couple random metal, cloth, beast, med, or whatever... just a couple random drops from low leveled mobs, then it's most likely worthless. However if you have a stack (x99) consider storing some so you can process for materials later. Materials are used to create equipment and item in the blacksmith and synthesis skills, or even through NPC. You could also used processed materials for decorating your house. If you are not interested in venturing into that then ignore this.
Also I would keep dropped weapons and armor (if the stats look good to you) and keep them in storage. Especially weapons of different elements, might be useful for farming. And you might need different weapons if you want to try a new character of another build.
