So I specifically want to do a tank (always enjoyed the supporting classes more than the dps) but as much as possible I want to try avoiding established builds. I want to try to understand the class as a whole and build a skill set that fits my playstyle. So I need to know, how is everyone able to make builds that make sense? How are they able to take skills from other trees and use them together with other skills to create a combination that actually works?

Most study about it by watching yt videos, while others test it personally. ^_^

You just need to know what you're supposed to do as tank and find skills that fit your purpose

    TL;DR: trial n error
I usually reserve a character. It will take a few days for this char to level up to around 120~130 following current mq. Then from there building up my char and test what works. If fail then reset the char then retry :V
Sound hardcore but it is the best there is since reset char is not free and reset is the only way to get better build. Of course a few youtube video is good. And check up on coryn since it has decent database for the build. Or if with more up-to-date info, often check the guide section here.

I just want to give you a little tip that I learned myself, Don't avoid skills or something that makes part of popular builds just because it is popular, you may end with bad skills that won't work for parties nor your own preferred playstile.
    ...Let's just say going GSW on a pure Brawler is really. Reeeallly fun, but bad, not even soloing it can.. sadly ;w;
Had to get used to the warkryrikihanshbuffs (atk buff stacking, not so fun 4me), but still spared 10SP to my quick aura and other things unique (I think) to my build.

    I hope this helps '-')b

In my perspective, I just watch various builds on Youtube and see which skill is abused the most, that's how you find the "core skills" for your playstyles
And I just build with them as core, with Coryn's tool as calculator for sp cost and such, like "this skill is good, but not must-have, this skill is what defines a [insert your class], so focus on taking it first hand, etc. etc."
Of course there are trials and errors, but can be avoided by learning from the senpai(s) in the community (not YouTube tho, some builds on YT is bullsh*t)

I read some skill descriptions and trying to emulate a build that might give synergy on my playstyle.
Don't hesitate to take some mainstream skills as they will play a big part when you play.

If you play supportive tank, I suggest check the priest, support, minstrel, dancer and shield skill tress to get the skills whic you needed the most.

You don't necessarily have to watch popular videos to make one. To make a viable build, you have to take note of the following:

•Skill animation & duration (including skill ending lags like your character just raising or lowering a hand)
    •Skill effect & calculation
    •Weapon requirement
    •Stat allocation
    •Your own style
•Bosses you are using it to

Build videos are shortcut. If you know the details you can just skip watching a build and make one. Speaking of which, every builds have core skills or mainstream skill which will be the same no matter which variation on the said build is created.

    Simple questions before starting.
    • What role should I do?
    • How should it play out?
    • Is it viable long-term?
First one, pretty simple. What on "I meant how should it play out" is choosing the skills that fits your prefered play style. Then, ask yourself if these skills combined, will play well. E.g:
I want play a tanky 2h dark knight -esque. Build focus: Aggro-generating build with HP & MP manipulation. With that in mind I'll go for:
Knight Skills, Dark Skills, Kaikiri, WCOS etc. Use corynclub to manage SP.
Is it viable long-term? To test that out, start MQ from the beginning with that build and observe if it plays out well. If not, start over with the drawing board.

Thank you, everyone! I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I should do now!

you can do all the theorycrafting you want and still fail.

most important is to play the character from lv1 onwards.
don't cheat your way through the main quest and fill up all your points.
add skills 1 by 1 and thoroughly play around with them.
rather than collecting all the skill trees that fit into the theme, you have to combine specific skills that work with your desired play style.

there is no synergy between different skill trees, even when they use the same weapons. sometimes even the skills within the same tree don't really work together.
simple concepts like "i'll use blade, knight and shield skills" won't work by default.

start with "i want to do *this*" (just one thing, not all at once)
then get that skill, use it and from there plan what you want next and what will work together with the skills you have.
no matter how good, cool or useful a skill may be, you don't need all of them and you can't. be picky, many skills can be used in more than one way.

Hones playing the game and doing different builds helps a lot with this. It’s part of the trial and error process when you basically tinkered with almost every skill you’ll know what works for you and what does not. I normally do one build as a lead up to another build where I take the experience gained in using certain skills and if it works I incorporated it into another..... my prime example is my burst build, my farmer burst build was a lead up to my burst dps build , in that build I tested the effects of motion speed and what not in battle and I saw the challenges in it, as we speak I am working on a version 2 of my burst build where I’ll continue to iron out an annoying flaw I came across while using it.

same goes for me for tanks...... there are many ways you can do such a build and knowing which suits you will take some trial and error, besides barehand I have built every type of generic tank build there is on here and I have settled on my mage tank ftw . So you’re gonna ruin some characters in the process if you want the perfect build

There is a core which consumes probably around 70% of SP that you see in every meta build (for a reason, mostly...). If you don‘t wanna be a special snowflake (don‘t get me wrong, making unusual builds is fun, but I think that‘s not what you are looking for) use that core and then analyze what your build is missing to distribute the last SP (for example due to using the core and noticing what scenarious you have problems with). If you aren‘t an experienced player figuring the core can be difficult. Check multiple builds on youtube/the forums and that what you see in all of them is probably good to take as well. Also discuss your build idea with your experienced guild members (if you have them). Later on distributing the first 230 SP will take you 2 minutes. But the last 50 can very well take weeks (at least in my case).
