    Imagine you have 99% resistance. You take 1% damage. You add another 1% resistance. 100% Resistance. You take 0% damage. That last 1% resistance mitigates 100% of your damage, right?

    Wrong.

    Resistances can be stacked, but only to an extent. Let's talk about which resistances to pursue, and which items are the best for them.

    According to Mayam's thread, resistances are split and stacked in three ways. The first:

    (Stat + Stat + Stat)
    * (Refinement + Refinement + Refinement)
    * (Sanctuary)
    * (Guardian)
    * (Gear + Gear + Gear + Aegis + Protection)
    * (Guard Rate * Guard Power)

    This means that, if you had Gear10% + Gear10% + Gear10%, then the total would be 30% resistance.
    If you had Gear10% * Skill10% * Stat10%, however, then the total would only be 27.1% resistance.
    (100% - 0.90^3)

    Ok, so what?
    Let's try a bigger number
    Gear33% + Gear33% +Gear33% = 99% resistance (1% dmg?)
    Gear33% * Skill33% * Stat33% = 70% resistance. (30% dmg?)
    (100% - 0.67%^3)

    The second way resistances are split up, is by:
    Element + Element + Element
    Element * Phys/Mag Resistance

    So Element25% + Element 25% = 50% Resistance
    Element25% * Phys/Mag25% = 42.1% Resistance

    And finally, the third way that resistances are split up, is by the cap. If any one particular category exceeds 50%, then that category gets split at 50%. And then again at 100%.
    So let's say that your gear gives you 110% Dark Resistance, the highest possible resistance in the game. You might think that this would mean Damage * -1.10, healing you for 10% damage per hit, but this is not the case. Instead, 110% resistance is calculated as
    50% * 50% * 10%, (0.50*0.50*0.90=0.225)for a total of 77.5% resistance to Dark.
    What this means is that resistances CAN stack, but only up a point. For example, if you have 45% resistance to something, and you add another 5% resistance in the exact same category, then you only take 50/55 of the damage you would have taken before. About a 9% decrease!
    But if you were to add another 5% resistance increase on top of that, then you would only take 95/100 of the damage you would have taken before; only a 5% decrease ):

    The point is, if you can, you want to aim for 50% resistance in exact same categories. So, like, at 45% resistance on gear, adding another 5% would really decrease your damage by 9%.

    So if you manage to land on 50% resistance, between your first 1% giving 1% damage reduction, and your last 1% giving 1.999% damage reduction, and everything in between reducing damage by amounts in between, landing on or near 50% resistance gives you about 1.5x the damage reduction you might expect.

    *The equation for this is not linear. The exact equation for calculating what %damage reduction each %resistance will give is (1-(100-x)/(101-x))*100. So, for example, even though the first 1% resistance reduces damage by 1%, and the 50th 1% resistance reduces your damage by about 2%, the 26th 1% resistance only reduces your remaining damage by 1.327%, not 1.5%. The damage reduction gets exponentially better the closer you get to 50%.

    *If you have the choice between a same resistance, or a different resistance with twice value (i.e., 5% Dark vs. 10% Magic), then the resistance with twice the value may always be the better way to decrease damage.

    *Personally, I always focus on element resistance, because it's a usually a 50/50 chance whether you'll be facing Physical or Magical damage.

    I'll complete this list when the other elements become relevant again :p

    Btw idk if this belongs in the guides section or the builds section x_x Gomen if I got it wrong.

    Mermaid Ears (h20)

    *The highest you can get on custom gear is 7% p/m res. and 14% element res. This would supposedly only cost 140pot (70 each), but my personal tests have shown it costing twice that much <_< This would also reduce its specified damage by at least 20% [1.00-(0.93*0.86)]
    *Certain items, the Xmas cakes, give +50% resistance to the main 4 elements

    I have a theory based on my experiences here, that finak damage is always reduced by your character level... I.e., if you are level 145, and a mob does 146 damage, then their damage against you will be reduced down to 1 per hit.

    If this is true, then Resistance Stacki actually has more utility than previously realized.
    Imagine, a boss does a base of 600 damage.
    You resist 75% of it.
    The final damage from the boss is taken down from 455 (600-145) to just 5 (600*0.25-145), resisting 98.9% of the damage you would have otherwise taken.
    But, of course, boss damages fluctuate, and I have no solid proof of this, so don't quote me on it. But I do think it's worth looking into~ o,o Hehehehe... Soon, I shall have a tank that takes 1 damage, and a pet that deals 4m damage~ Mwuahahaha~ o,o
    Lv.10 Aegis = +30% Mag Res. -15% Phys Res.
    Lv10 Protection = +30% Phys Res. -15% Mag Res.

    So if you use both, you get +15% Phys. Res. +15% Mag. Res.
    The difference between 30% and 15% is 70/85=82%. You can take at least 18% less damage from one category, at the expense of (115/85=1.353) 35% more damage from the other category.
    Some bosses only use attacks of one type. Ancient Empress, for example, only does Magic damage. So if you only use Aegis when fighting Ancient Empress, you take 18% less damage overall.
    The max benefit from this would be 50/65 = 0.77 = 23% less damage. So anywhere between 23% and 18% less damage if you can use these skills to their fullest potential.

    Someone was nice enough to make a list of the attack types of all the old bosses: http://toramonline.com/index.php?threads/chart-protection-aegis-or-both-v-1.24095/#post-319697

    Guard can reduce your damage as well. The equation is simple. Guard Rate * Guard Power. If you guard with 50% power 50% of the time, you reduce an average of 25% damage.

    I won't go into detail because it takes too large of an investment for not much return, but let me go over just a few things:

    > The damage reduction starts super low, and goes up exponentially.
    1% reduction 1% of the time = 0.01% reduction
    2% * 2% = 0.04%
    3% * 3% = 0.09%

    > You can get a maximum of 26% Rate and 20% Power from xtals
    Builder Golem (7% + 7%) (Weapon)
    Daddy Finpen (6% + 0%) (Armor)
    Grylle (0% + 5%) (Additional)
    Memecoleus (5% + 0%) (Special)
    Caspy*4 (2% + 2%)*4=(8%+8%) (Normal)

    > You can get a total of (25% + 5%) from heavy armor and passive skills. Costs 20sp for Heavy Armor Mastery + Advanced Heavy Armor.
    > You can get a total of (45% + 0%) from the active skills, Guardian + Gloria + Staff + Shield(+S)
    > Guard Rate is capped at 90%.
    > You have a base of 25% Guard Power unless you equip a shield.

    > 2nd Ann. Shield V gives (12% + 36%)
    > Shura Koshirae katan gives (20% + 20%)
    > Parrying Dagger gives (15% + 15%)
    > Total would be (35% + 60%)
    > If you put all the best gear together, you get (96% + 85%)
    0.9*0.15+0.1*1 = 0.135 = 86.5% resistance, on top of whatever other armor you may have.

    If by this you mean the skills protection and aegis they are added to the stat's total of physical and magical resistance, it is not multiplied seperately.
    Suppose you take a physical fire element attack:-
    PhysicalResistanceTotal*FireResistanceTotal*RefineResistanceTotal
    Thats how the reduction takes place.

    Umm can you help me out.

    Example... Enemy damage without me wearing equips, skills and having only 1def/mdef is 1000... How much damage will i receive if I have:
    +20% resist circle of order(additional)
    +45% from +S armor/additional/shield
    +15% using both aegis & protection skill

    +500 def & mdef (i read an article about this and it basically says that if you have 200def/mdef=20% dmg reduction while 500def/mdef=26% dmg reduction)

    +59% guard power (my guard rate proc)

    500def/mdef = 22.5% reduction
    1000 --> 775
    EqResist 45% reduction from +S add armor shield
    775 --> 426
    35% resist reduction circle of order and protection+aeg
    426 --> 277

    IF physical and guardable, guard power = 59%
    277 --> 113

    IF magical and guardable, guard power gets halved so = 29%
    277 --> 196
