Hello I am new to this!

I’m trying to use a katana - I’m just really weak but I’m not sure if this will get better though, it’s probably normal at this level?

I just die a lot, rely heavily on the auto revita.
Perhaps my gear is the issue but I don’t know how or where to improve it, these are all drops I got apart from the additional gear from the market.

I think my MP regenerates too slow, that’s probably the main issue?

Also does katana build get AOE? Thank you!

As a newbie you dont have to think too much about your performance, just prioritize on getting higher level and get the level 4 skills. Before that, use zantei settetsu as your main offensive/defensive skill. You can use friend mercenary to get through main story quest and play them at easy mode. Katana has hasso happa for the aoe skill but its better to keep the skills at level 5, and then when you finally get the acces to tier 4 skill get tenryu ransei. You should max out two handed though

Hello thank you for the reply!

I’m confused about two handed though, do I buy another skill tree and then unlock them all? Also is that the dual sword tree?

I believe its tier 2 skill so yeah you can buy it on library in sofya to unlock all tier 2 skills. A mercenary should help you out a lot. Even the random one should offer you a decent damage and you can just avoid direct fight. If the boss gets tough you can escape the map and set the boss on easy mode. You can reach level 120+ from main story quests exp reward

Thanks again, I’ll try to find this two handed one. So do I buy the dual wield book for it? I’m not sure how to get the mercenary but I will look. Does my gear matter? The katana damage is so poor

Go to party>hire mercenary with spina/friend mercenary/guild mercenary. And yes, gears matter but you just need to level up a first. Katana is a beast at high level(the gears are pricey though)

Focus your stat points all on DEX first as this is the main stat for Katana which gives the highest ATK in terms of points. After that you can focus next on STR.
Focus on leveling up to get your lvl 3 skills which allows you to access Zantei Settetsu which I highly recommend for starters.
Shukuchi which is also from lvl 3 skills for katana gives ampr when you do that unsheathe auto attack (mininum of 3 meters to trigger the auto attack animation for katana).
Gears wise, I recommend getting Kuro Tsurabami (Katana) from Torture Machina from Small Demi Factory.
    Level>Skills>Gears
I have a video tutorial for players who are new to katana but only when they hit level 3 skills XD

    Thank you!

I will probably save my skill points until I can get level 3 then, I can’t for the life of me work our what this two handed skill thing is from post above so I can’t get that sorted.

Annoyingly I put some skill points in STR already but I will focus on DEX only now

Two handed is a katana skill, to put it simply, it sharply increase your damage if you dont equip any subhand gear. Its a passive skill

I recommend picking up HP Boost from the Survival skill tree for the 1000 HP. It'll make you much more durable and make progression much easier starting out. Alongside that Stingy Shoulder Pads are at around 8k ~ 10k spina on the board and will provide another 1000 HP. This will help you out the most in your progression. If you happen to get one with a slot, consider getting a MP +100 ~ +400 crystal. Whatever is affordable for you while being able to afford potions.

After that save up and concern yourself with leveling. Don't worry too much about armor, more defense is nice, but any armor will do fine, so long as you have a nice HP base. As for weapons. Blacksmith weapons should be fine for progression, but keep an eye out for cheap katanas on the board with high atk that you can keep for a long while. Don't concern yourself with being strong, just concern yourself with being able to progress.

Two Handed is a katana skill, based on the ss you sent, yours is already lv5. It's the skill at the bottom of the mononofu skill tree.

You need more hp, 658 hp is simply just too low especially when you don't have a strong mercenary to fast kill the easy difficulty bosses for you, try buying vita plus 3 from hora diomedea town npc store, it gives +1500 hp. You can also try looking for decent level friends or guild mates that has hp food buff(a lvl 5 one gives 2000 hp). You already have the skill 2 handed on the katana skill tree but it's on lvl 5, need to max lvl it to get more damage. During battle the best way to regenerate mp the fastest is by utilizing shukuchi lvl 10 and dash attacking back and forth to always activate shukuchi's buff(dash towards boss and autoattack 2 time, move back away, dash and attack 2 times again, move away, etc.) there also the event limited item called "heart cookies", if you trade that with friends it gives you a buff to recover 150 mp in 10 seconds, it's very cheap right now, just need to craft on blacksmith with 10 blue ribbons

Thank you so much everyone. I will follow the recommendations 100% - which is the two handed skill I need to get to lvl 10? I can’t figure it out from the description sorry for being stupid

I did think my HP was pathetically low. Really low attack on my weapon too I think

The katana builds rely on their passives to boost their damage when equipped with katanas, so at lower levels below Lv100, your weapon's attack value is irrelevant. You want to get "Two Handed" skill, which is unlocked after Bushido, up to Lv10 to further enhance your damage output. The aforementioned skill Bushido also give you a bit more health.

No, tenryu ransei: zannou is unaffected by magadachi/zantei level. And you'll be doing tenryu most of the time

By then when youre strong, you might want to prepare a skill reset to switch to using Tenryu after getting lvl 150, so you can leave magadachi at 5 and zantei at 1 as what Yunan said above. (Edit) Remove some skill points from Zantei lvl 10 and leave it at level 1 that's what I do.
Tenryu Ransei has a "conditional" skill that when upon succession of using Magadachi (offense) or Zantei (parry), you will activate Tenryu Ransei : Zannou refreshing your Tenryu Ransei timer back to 30 seconds. So as long your Tenryu Ransei is at lvl 10 youre good to go

From @+Aria Kanzaki+ 's advice, I've tried Lv10 Magadachi for better MP return whenever it's used to parry an attack (returns 200 at lv10?). Even if you dont Zannou, you still save your ass. Zantei is still great with Tenryu even at Lv10, because the Armor Break effect is something you could desire if you wanna run Garyou in the same build as well after obtaining Tier 4 skills. Newer bosses have boorish amount of Defense, so there's no shame in cutting it down to half with armor break from Zantei.

I agree with all the stuff everyone said, except for the gear. Since Katana wants to have crit, the drops you should be aiming for is
Katana: Sumire Renkokyu (drop outside the gate of Cradle of Soldiers) > Lil Empress Katana - for crit rate
Armor: Once you've gotten far enough to the Dried river with all the bunny summoners in the dark domain, get a NPC craft assassin's garb. It has 15 Crit Rate and would help you land more hits on your Katana.

Ah your playstyle is very different from mine as a beginner.
I rely on setting up Meikyo Shisui and then manually Zantei mobs' aoes. As for MP Recovery, Shukuchi's AMPR from its autos can recover faster than standing with Magadachi at max level, which imo is a waste if you can just auto 3 meter Shukuchi.
Kuro Tsurubami allows to quickly sidestep every auto due to its 1k atkspd, and with Meikyo Shisui, the player can auto crit with ample amount of time from Meikyo Shisui's buff.
Its just my experience that this for me is solid when I first started out.
Katana characters still can Crit via its skills (choosing to rely on Meikyo Shisui for start is not a bad choice) when they first started out which I feel its really helpful even without the help of crit gears in the very beginning for newer players.
