With MTL, you either go all the way till 100% ailment resist or, nothing. So yeah, MTL>VIT is better than VIT>MTL
217 MTL will give you only 63% ailments resist, even if you add white eyepatch(20%) and Jeremiah mail(5%) you will still get debuffs most of the time. Its 100% or nothing

If one has more than 5% Ailment Resist Total on Avatars they could reduce their MTL investment too... easiest at multiples of 5, since you only have to reduce 17 per 5% on Avatars...

The extra Vit still not worth the MTL, if you have extra ailment resist you better use aggro or magic/physical resistant gear instead. Take kitty hat for example, it has 15% ailment resist and 15% HP, Santa beard has 10% ailment resist and 30% aggro. Even better if you have 25% ailment resist solely from avatar stats, you can get circle of order or charm belt for phys/magic resistance/aggro

At one point we will max 2 stat anyway, maxing out MTL first is more useful. As we are now you can easily reach 20k max HP even if you max out MTL.

To give you the breakdown, as Yunan said MTL>VIT
Why? well say you went vitality max over mtl(would be hard to get 100% ail resist still) and as Yunan said even if you have 99% ail resist you'll still find yourself getting debuffed quite often. Debuffs and why you shouldn't like them at all... You're tanky and let's say you have 60k(just example) HP. Well boss hit you with ignite....wait 5 seconds OMG your hp is down to like 2k if not dead or something. See the debuffs attack max hp percentages rather than doing a set amount of damage. So you can have all the hp you want but late game around maybe york or higher you're gonna get debuffed a lot and even by norm trash mobs occasionally. SO, MTL is better because with 100% resist you don't gotta worry about that and with proper equipment and maybe later(or now, idk what you're working with) xtals help you can still have around 20k hp and it won't disappear in the blink of an eye and will make one of the signature tanking skills "sanctuary" still useful. There's a general breakdown as i understand it and plenty of reason not to go vit>mtl

Knowledge credit goes to Yunan as well as a few others. Listen to Yunan, won't steer you wrong :3

i see a lot of people saying that ailment resistance doesn't have any effect on bosses if it isn't 100%.
that is NOT true. ailment resistance doesn't lower the infliction rate of ailment attacks. those are set and won't change.
when you would get inflicted with an ailment, the game rolls a number between 1 and 100, and if it is smaller than your ailment resistance, the ailment will be negated.
so 50% ailment resistance is exactly a 50% chance to not get inflicted with ailments if they would hit you.

if you go for Sanctuary, you will also have Restore (or whatever it's name was, the ailment cure skill that also acts like a vaccine and recovers mp).
with that, ailment resistance is not really needed, and VIT makes Sanctuary much better.

the only advantage of ailment resistance is that it also works for knockback, flinch, tumble and stun.

Recovery does cost 1mp. The cost of it has gone down since first released. Plus you recover mp when you use it and clear a status ailment. It’s just a tad more work but can still work well so you can have Vit. Its all player preference on what you want
