Need help with garyou

So I was testing out Garyou on my katana character with 1800 atk on Venena, I stacked up a bit more than ten katana skill by using using pulse blade, hasso, issen and triple thrust combo multiple times on one pillar before immediately using garyou on the other one. For some reason, the damage couldn't even go above 40k. Am I doing something wrong here?

 

Did you use kariki before garyou? If not that could be the problem, also armor break boosts it’s damage as well

 

This is the main problem here, too many proration points got ruined. Don't use combo with full physical skills, Tenryu Ransei > Auto Attack > Tenryu Ransei is enough to stacking up Garyou Tensei.

 

I see, so if I understand this, Tenryu should be used 10 times with auto attacks in between before using Garyou?

 

any katana skill will do (does Pulse Blade still do magic proration?). but yes, you need to balance proration with normal attacks.
the problem with Tenryu is that it changes Zantei to not inflict armor break, so you need to wait for it to run out before going for Garyu.
also, Kaikiri will end after Garyu no matter how much time was left. so it's better to take some time for Kaikiri's ampr boost, this will automatically help with proration too.

 

One question about Kaikiri, how do I use without it burning through half my health? Is the only way to learn recovery?

 

You can use Vaccine, but the most efficient way remains the usage of Revovery (you can buy stargem if you don't have enough sp though)

 

Along with that many experienced katana players don’t bother with hp since the katana skills make you virtually invincible, it takes a lot of practice but if you’re ever soloing bosss you can try to get the feel of Zentei and mada. One youtuber who opened my eyes to that is hivan if you never watched his videos check it out, I have never really made a katana build (although I intend to ) , I watch his videos because it’s entertaining and it really inforces that skill trumps power anyway . As a result of videos like that in toram many players are testing their limits by doing the 1hp challenge which is basically playing out a battle with no healing items burning away their hp with kariki while pawning the boss. Which is very possible since kariki’s burn cannot kill you since burn inflicts damage based on the hp you have remain so at 1 hp you takes 0 damage.

 

Maybe for some reason the pierce doesn't register or maybe its just a bad proration.

You can use a combo of bouncing blade>tenryuu(swift) to stack the garyou quickly. I usually use swift tenryuu combo to speed up the first 2 stack of it.

Imo its worth it to learn recovery or buy the stargem, though if you can dodge/counter everything like Hivan it would be awesome.

Most tanks learn recovery to get sanctuary, so in a party you can ask the tank to give you the recovery. Tanks are mostly free anyways, unless its a semidps dps tank that also wants to do damage.
