Kill count. Just kill mobs whatever level it is, it is the same. The more u kill more ur pet gets

It is forever stuck to that level. You can replace it with other skill or same skill with different level from other pets.

This might be off topic, but how much time does it usually take to level up a skill from say, lvl 6 to lvl 8, if it was lvl 6 at the start? Me and some friends did some testing by farming mobs using cotinuous damage aoe like storm and blizzard, and it took us only a few hours to lvl from lvl 6 to lvl 8.

My pet had encourage lvl 6 at the start and after a few hours of farming mobs it reached lvl 8.

Afaik, it start off as 100 from initial level and doubles up as the level goes.
    Here is an example:
Pet a got magic lance level 5 and pet b got magic lance level 1. The amount off kills that pet b need to reach to level 5 is the same amount pet a need to reach level 9.

Lots of stuff about leveling skills (but focus is primarily on passive skills).

Killing mobs singly (without AoE) as fast as your pet can attack seems to be the way to go (the pet has to "touch" the monster to get credit for the kill), and the fastest kill rate is dependent on how frequently your pet can attack (one-hitting the mob). Lately, I have been using Raffy in Ruined Temple Town; they are slow to counter-attack, which means I have a better chance of keeping Quick Motion support skill active. I use a weak char that can't kill the mobs in less than 6 hits (especially if the pet skill is a buff, which doesn't harm the mob, so it takes a little longer for the pet to make the kill).

So... lv 6 to lv 8 (900 mob kills) would take about 50 to 75 minutes, depending on how often your pet can attack.

Well, my pet had gentle nature so it can't attack, and yeah as much as possible I use a weak damage skill like blizzard to aggro as much mob as possible, and let my pet cast encourage while the aggroed mobs still hasn't died, I got like 7% progress in 5 minutes when my pet's encourage skill is at lvl 8 by going at it this way with a party

    get the Skill Boost type.
it shares skill exp with all enabled skills, so passive skills gain exp from casting active skills like Encourage.

wait so if i just grab a bunch of mob's aggro, let pet cast encourage, then kill them after, the pet gets the exp of all those mobs killed for the skill?

no. drawing aggro with buff skills does not count as attacking, the pet will only gain exp for your one target mob.

Gentle nature (and Timid with short ranged weapon) will automatically register a hit on all active mobs after 3 seconds. then it will gain exp for all of them, no need to do anything.
you just need to wait 3 seconds after aggroing the mobs before you kill them.

So basically i need a pet cat that dish out skills and crapiest storm farmer build(im guessing, tank gear on a farm mage for endurance) to dish out big aoe aggro in the smallest amount of time and hold keep them alive 3 sec minimum. Kinda remind me of the time i spent grinding on the skeleton mines.

Go to your crib, take a screenie of your pet's skills. Then grind like that for an hour and take a screenshot again. Compare with same using other weapon class using this method. It may or may not give motivation if you notice the difference of 2 skill grinding methods.

Altho i missed those buggy days that i can just binge farm on the golden skeleton and get massive kill counts. Since i i only need to target the GS and drag it in the middle of the cramped room while i get all spikey with all the aggro arrows pointed at me and kill the normal mobs in every 2 secs(just enuf time to be get their attention)

An old friend made a video of the same (but deleted it).
Basically, her understanding was that gentle pets has to gain ampr while enemy is aggrod. Since gentle pets don't attack, they can passively regen their ampr during battle, and you will get the pet skill exp if there was at least 1 tick of auto-mp regen before the mob died.

Although i vowed never to level up a skill with a gentle pet (lvl cap of 2) again, if I was to repeat it, I would bring a toy hammer-wielding dual wielder to spam spin slash, loaded up with matk so Impact would be my final finishing move... and then hit ez, concentrated mobs this way (like shell masks or zoktda skellies).

    thanks!
why never skill a gentle pet? unless you mean skilling up a gentle pet with low cap lol. but isnt gentle the easiest skills to level? why not always get skills on gentle

Yeah I'm never training a pet with a low level cap just because it had a high skill level roll. Once you max it, the road to raise the pet cap up to 150+ (from original cap lvl of 2) is far too long...
