Get both (though i havent done it :(, a scarey cat).

In full mage party, use full arrow combo

In slow moving harmless bosses, use armbreak save mp

In fast moving lethal bosses (daniela blue zones), use shield mage and cast aegis/protection. Bonus shield resists.

    Just my 2 cents

depends on what you want to have.

shields compliment that staff's affinity for support.
guard prevents spell cancel and knockback, you can cast barriers and Gloria becomes more useful for yourself.
you can also stack up some extra armor.

arrows actually lower your defences, but you can use shot skills and get a buff on hunter traps (they deal magic damage).
it allows you to greatly expand your skill arsenal with various status ailments.

About spell cancel, does guard only prevent spell cancel if you use Shield and staff?(...and heavy armor too?).

Because i test it with katana+dagger+ring with total 55% Gr/Gp and both maximizer and finale still get flinched even with guard activated(many times and never worked).

As [finale]mage your time mostly used for (mp charge - maximizer - getting position - finale combo - getting position - repeat).
That itself consumes more than 10secs and mostly mage get hit while casting skill.

Theoretically p.def is good as an absolute defense, but imo it will rarely used.
    p.def also means extra 500aggro(lv10) :(

Imo arrow not just cuz of my build thread but arrow mages allow you to cast combos further away 14+ metres before your matck skill kicks in :)
A lot of ppl say shield but to be honest why? Most mages in party's do not need to get close to justify needing defense leave shields to tanks and brawlers that's there jobs in fairness.
And ofc people argue what about solo options well my build does it no problem so next argument?
Stun ? Again leave to tanks+ brawlers
    Next argument?
    Looks pretty?
    No they don't...
    Next? Lol

Remember my Friend if you build your combo correctly you can cast final many times almost every boss so far I've only used maximiser 1 time per every 2 boss runs :) it's all about the build people use :)

I was talking about mage+shield buddy(...p.def), gonna use guardian as save tag for 3mp finale combo? (...well it could anyway, but s.attack does better imo).

Mine was 10mp finale - cast it once then let other finish - ready for next run - charge while breaking part - repeat. ;)

I think shield is better i use dagger but irarelly use it.

Shield can stun and has higher survival.
    Dagger can spam 0mp daggers.
Arrow might bad to use it just make your combo longer.

    You need 1400k mp
In my combo boss wont mind you
    First use Sneak attack(400mp)
    Second Impact>Finale(smite)>holy fist(con)
    Third mp charge>Maximizer
    Forth Repeat Second and third
    Last Repeat the first step

I personally like to use a shield mage. My shield mage can get their MDEF up to <2400 by using heavy armor and gloria.

Pal p.def saved me a tons of times after cast finale. Finale as charge skill make u very vulnerable definetely for survival and if u know timing p.def is OP

I don't think there's a strictly "better" mage setup. It really depends on how you want to play as a mage. Arrows cam let you be Long Range DPS, Solo(a little hard w/ def scaling down) or Long Range Kite w/ CC skills that do Slow/Tumble/Blind/Lethargy. Shield can let you be Support, Solo, or Semi-Tank w/ CC skills that Slow/Stun/Tumble/Flinch. Knucks lets you be hybrid Physical+Magic Damage dealer. Meanwhile, Daggers can let you be DoT DPS.

The most important part of this debate is HOW exactly do you see yourself playing as a Mage.

Arrow and Shield Mages are both good.. then make a 2 in 1 build since there are a lot of spare sp to use in order to adjust in different kinds of situation.
