Information is power! And luckily for everyone in this forum its shared for free.
The following data was tested thoroughly and cannot be found on any other site or sources.

UNDERSTANDING LONG & SHORT RANGE DAMAGES

    A bug or broken mechanic?
Besides mistranslations and vague explanations, Asobimo loves to fool us, and all this time they've done it with the -8m/8m+ descriptions. Contrary to the common belief, the difference between long and short ranges doesn't reside in the weapon's max attack range (i.e. bowgun with 8 or less meters of range vs. bow with 8 or more meters of range). In the case of Range Damage % coming from Xtals/Equipment it is based on the range the skill is casted. In case of Range Damage % coming from a passive skill it is based on the max range a skill can damage (i.e. with Long Range passive skill casting Snipe from 3m afar vs. casting it from 16m afar will always have the damage boost, but with ◇Flare Volg casting Snipe from less than 8m will not have the damage boost). An archer can deal short range damage just as a warrior can be dealing long range damage while tanking upfront even if he doesn't know it. Skills have a default "range damage" of their own, below I'll explain how this works. Don't worry, I'll use the least math possible.

    Where is the difference?
The difference between long range and short range damages resides in the max damage range/distance of a skill. Let me clear it up.
    • Here is an example of Long Range Damage: "a Brawler that casts Sonic Wave at 1 meter from the target." Why is this Long Range Damage? Because Sonic Wave can deal a hit from 8 meters or farther. Therefore, Sonic Wave is a Long Range Skill that deals Long Range Damage regardless of how far it was casted or what weapon was equipped.
    • Here is an example of Short Range Damage: "a DPS Mage that casts Impact at 3 meters from the target." Why is this Short Range Damage? Because to deal damage with Impact you need to be 3 meters or closer from the target. Whoop! This means that Ancient Empress (MATK +4%, Short Range Damage -10%) decreases Impact's damage?! Yes, but not Storm's damage because you can deal damage with Storm from up to 8 meters afar. Actually, other Magic Skills besides Impact are never affected by Range Damage in any way. Impact is the exception among them.
What about "Long Range" passive skill?
This passive is a literal kick in the face from Asobimo, it is broken and I'll tell you why. The skill description states that it is limited to Bows / Bowguns. This is a lie. It works with any weapon or no main weapon (equipping an arrow as sub is enough), but it won't recognize long range damaging skills except if they belong to the Shot Skill tree. Having said this, your Snipe as a gunner will benefit from this passive.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The passive skill has been modified to No Limit. It now affects other physical skills which can be casted from +8m and belong to other kill trees like Sonic Wave and Tempest. It boosts them by 10% at ANY RANGE.

    How to benefit?
As mentioned in the examples above, utilizing Range Damage modifiers has it's pros and cons. Range Damage % works over the total damage done per hit, not over base attack. This means that the [Insert Range Damage Type] % will be added to every hit a skill deals, even to the critical hits!

Let's say you deal a Triple Kick that sums 50k white damage total, it's critical hit version would sum a total of 75k (no STR stat). If you equip a gear with Short Range Damage +10% the total damage dealt would be 82,500 (10% of 75 = 7.5). Impressive boost? Definitely. Better than your typical DEX %, INT %, STR % and so.
A mage who casts Storm with a Flare Volg (Long Range Damage +2%) set on a Philosopher's Ring will deal higher damage ticks than the same mage using a Mauez (MaxMP +150) on his ring... And ironically, the difference in the cost of these xtals is huge!

There is a variety of range damage modifier gear and crysta such as the B.B. Garb, Revolver and Pillar Golem.
Now that you can distinguish what counts as long and short range damage (ITS THE SKILL WHAT COUNTS) use it to your favor!

*As we all know, Asobimo hires info collectors/lurkers and they love to troll us by modifying game mechanics in each update without telling us. They nerfed Snipe's critical rate with bowgun by -25% 2 weeks after I published the famous "infinite snipe combo". They patched all the map glitches I uploaded to YT. So I'm sure that sooner or later they could modify how Long & Short Range damages work. Here is where I say: let's enjoy it while it lasts. ♡

Hmmmmm this would be useful since some of the Op attacks now, including the new Phantom Slash which has a range of 9m, can be categorized as long range damage

I knew this already but i believe impact is a physical skill that works like magic and scales off int, its why short range dmg and long range dmg doesnt affect wall, both can be cast at more than 8m but it only does dmg below that, but wall still isnt affected like but impact is, i did some testing awhile ago with Erg and its what we found

Was always sure sure the term long/short range dmg+ only applied to equipment stats. While long/short range passive skills are exclusive to their respective weapon skill tree.

To quote the last part, which i cannot do on mobile, almost every game does that. It's when they release new content and test it only to what they were supposed to be. Now with that being said, if they see some new content being used/exploited in the way they did not intended it to be, they will weigh in the ways to balance/ fix or better call it "nerf" the new content. To which will not have that much of a hig impact when used the way they intended it to be, and when used the way players use it.
