I just started Toram Online today, and now I'm trying to play seriously.
I tried looking around the forums, but it just led to more confusion, such as ideas of hybrid builds.

What I do know is, I'm comfortable with swords, and then knuckles. Other classes are meh to me. Everything else I didn't mentioned yet, I have no knowledge on, such as,
    • Places to grind for levels/money.
    • What skills to get/avoid.
    • Equipments to get/avoid.
    • List of equipments.
    • Builds.
    • Pets.
    • Where is everything (map and locations).
    • How to invest for stats for X class.
    • Trading/Market.
    • Cosmetics (avatars is the word?)
    Etc.
I know this is a lot of questions, but I really don't have much understanding of the game. This reality of how complex the game came to me when I got up to level 31 on swords and looked at the skills. What should I do? Just stay 1-hand? Shield? Dual-wield, 2-hands? I'm clueless of how to continue on. I think I messed up, since I got shields early on. Didn't invested too much, just a few points of the first skill. Would be glad if someone helped to lay out the basics and gave advice.

About pets, it's just new and is being researched.

It's avatars and not cosmetics and can only be attained through using orbs or avatar tickets (you can make orbs from orbs shards and avatar ticket from ticket pieces) or if a rare occasion gifted from asobimo. (really really really rare, avatar tickets can be gifted after lives on the beemode(asobimo) YouTube channel though)

info about weapons and stats with some class ideas: http://toramonline.com/index.php?threads/complete-class-weapon-guide.20200/
    info about equipment stats: http://toramonline.com/index.php?threads/complete-stats-guide.17844/

bosses give the most exp, then mini bosses, large sized mobs and lastly the small mobs.
you can get 100, 300 and 600 spinas every day by doing any quest(s).
sell items dropped by monsters to the general store in town or trade with other players.
don't learn skills that you can't use with your weapon, or that don't fit you.
the descriptions are vague, but they contain important hints on how to use skills and/or what you need to use them effectively.
get equipment with stats that support your play style.
avoid equipment with stats that are not used by your character (like Guard Rate if you use light armor).
most things are available at the Blacksmith (in town), new equipment is unlocked as your level increases.
talk to the Townguard NPCs, you can find them in various places, they give hints and tips about how to get started.
don't trust the builds on this forum too much, most of them are very narrow minded (1 stat, 1 skill, requires expensive custom equipment to work).
the best is, what you design yourself. my Complete Class Guide can give you some inspiration ;)
you need Land to own a pet. Tamer skills are not required, they just give you more control over choosing a pet.
it's an optional profession, like Alchemy and Blacksmith skills.
since pets were just introduced, not much is known yet, but they are not stronger than a regular player.
they also take a slot in the party, so it's just a substitute party member, not an additional weapon.
you can open the map from the menu ;)
and on the map, there is a "world map" button which shows all the maps arranged in a nice grid.
the stat screen gives hints about which stats to use for your equipped weapon.
my Complete Class Guide also has many suggestions for the different classes ;)
trading can only be done if the other player is on the same map as you.
the market (consignment board) puts up your item for sale and everyone else who sees it can buy it, you don't have to be online to do this, but have to pay some of your sale for taxes.
avatars are optional premium content and their only function is fashion.
you can also look nice without them. Equipment Synthesis lets you transfer the look and colour (need special coloured equipment) from one gear piece to another, so you can customize your equipment's look and colour.
avatar pieces cannot be altered this way :p
also, even without owning any avatar pieces, you can equip one of your add, gears as "accessory".

Shields are sub-weapons (secondary skills) and can only be equipped with 1 handed weapons.
1h swords and 2h swords share the same skills, but get different effects since they are different weapons. they also get different effects from stat points.
2h swords have more power, but cannot equip sub-weapons since they are 2 handed weapons.
Dual Swords have their own skills and stats and are yet another weapon category :p
Shields reduce attack speed by -50%. learning Shield Mastery negates that effect.
since you already invested in that skill, you have to stick to Shields now, or you can delete it and make a new character.
you cannot delete the character you are currently playing, so you need a 2nd character to do that.
the game gives you 3 character slots for free, so you just need to play until you get the 2nd character, then you can make a new one and delete the old one if you don't like it.

•gridnding for levels/money: of your a sword user your best bet would be to boss farm for wanted materials/boss xtals/apps/dyes etc for exp and spina. If you are low level you can farm the Minotaur boss for Minotaur skins which are people are always buying for a decent price, otherwise it's just a matter of picking a boss that drops items people are wanting, and going and kill it over and over again. The other option is to make a Mage character and farm items for exp quests such as nightmare crystals and bitter nuts, you could use these yourself to level your characters or sell them for spina. But you are going to need at least one level 70 character and have your Mage have the storm skill otherwise you'll probably never get invited to a farm party.

•equipment to get/avoid: this question really depends on what you want your build to be able to achieve, if you want to stick with your 1h+shield you could look in the builds thread for a 1h+shield semi tank/tank, same goes for skills and stat location. My advice would be to take some time and read through all the build guides posted here on the forums if you are not sure what build route to take as a new player, your bound to find something that you'll like.

•pets: pets are a brand new feature to the game, there are a few good guides explaining everything on the forums already and I'd recommend having a read on them

If you're worried you messed up your build early on and want to take the 2h/dw route there's an achievement that offers you either book of oblivion or notebook of oblivion (it's been so long I can't remember the exact one) and that will be able to remove those shield skills and let you use those skill points again, if my memory serves me right the achievement is fairly low level and easy to get (i forgotten what you had to do to get it as well)

Alright, thanks everyone for the responses.

I think I'll go with dual blades. Only invested two points into shields, not a big deal.
For pets, not gonna worry about it for now.
For grinding, seems like best options are quests and bosses are the best option

Can someone clear up what Sword Techniques does? I didn't really understand the description. Does it mean all sword-related things get boosted, or just skills you use in combat (Hard Hit, Astute, etc)?

places to grind. pretty much only two come to mind- nisel mountain mountainside(shell masks) and Empress tomb area 3(nightmare roars). these can be sold for spina or used.
skills to get- depends on your build. for a mage you ought to get storm ASAP. other useful skills include HP and MP boost, MP charge, Critical up, shield bash. best to look up a guide in the class section. use them to get an idea, but don't outright copy them, especially if they don't suit your play style
Equipment- start of with NPC craft. when you have enough spina and you want to get more DPS, get yourself player crafted stuff.
-Again, the number of individual builds are pretty much infinity.
Pets- kinda new. I've no clue what to say about them.
-where is everything already mentioned. as you get the hang of the game you'll get to know some of the non- universal items, which you can farm and sell
-Usually builds go for STR/Dex for attack, depending on the main weapon. VIT adds HP and defense, and pairs well with heavy remodel armors. INT/dex is used by mages
-There are three methods of selling you can use. First is the consignment board. check up the price of the item you wish to sell, and them sell it for the lowest price you see(like a stack of b.nuts is 4k, so you put it for 4k). I wouldn't advice selling boss/mini boss crystas on the consignment. Second way is shout. you repeat S>(item, price),PM. wait for someone to whisper you on how much they wish to buy/ offer. if you overprice people might ridicule you. Last way would be to post a selling thread on forums. there's a section for that.
There are two ways of enhancing your cosmetics. first would be to buy avatar chests from the orb shops. the second would be to get the gear you wish to have a certain appearance along with a similar gear which looks like what you want to.then you take it to the synthesist. you lock the appearance and stats(and dyes if any) and then synthesise them together. The NPC synthesist is very expensive, so I'd advice taking the help of a player synthesist. be warned though, weapons and armor are untradable if they are not player crafted, so it's best to make your own synthesist.
also please remember, player synthesists only have a set amount of locks(determined by alchemy proficiency), so they can only lock so many of the stats, appearance and three dye slots.
Kinda a lot to learn at once. just go play! make mistakes!if you lose something CB's got your back:p

I am just going to assume Blade Skills = normal attacks with swords, but thanks.

For dual blades, I think I'll do max/high DEX, some AGI (to increase attack speed), then critical. I asked people and got mixed results for stats. Some were basically what I said; others said to get STR and other stats instead of DEX, and just run accuracy potions with it. I think I'll stick with DEX, it still increases damage, along with a built-in accuracy boost.

Those are all pure DPS variants of dw, instead you can just go sword fu. Dual wield is more of a damaging tank.
Add about 150 Dex, 100 Agi and rest in STR

Any suggestions for grinding spots? I know I robot mentioned Nisel mountain and Empress tomb area (haven't looked into this yet), but any where else? Nisel worked for 14 levels (36 to 50) but it seems inefficient at this point.

oh, jeez.didn't know about the quests? Ok, I'll explain.
shell masks drop both nisel wood and bitter nuts.nisel wood can be used for the NPC quest timber shortage, and bitter nuts for the quest Overlooked snack. you can repeat these quests indefinitely. do them, until you reach lvl 70 at least(some people go further, like up to level 90 and all that)
same thing with Nightmare crystals for nightmare roars. it's for the pride of the rich quest

I knew about the quests, sorry that I didn't mentioned it before. It's just, it takes more quests to level up (obviously), and not sure if I gotten to the point where it's not worth doing Timber Shortage and Overlooked Snacks. But I haven't apparently, since you said 70-90. Got a lot of work to done then.

I decided to make a mage in a spare slot to test again, and followed this guide for building my mage.
So I got an ooze staff and an albero shield, then looted a MD. Gave magic device a test, and thought, "What's the purpose of staff, if magic device can do the same thing, but better (such as, increasing the range of wall and storm)?".
Is there any purpose for staves? From what I have seen, magic devices are commonly used over staves. Should I just start over with magic device as main, or just stick with staff + shield? Have magic device as swap-out? Really don't know what to do about this.
As for the build I linked earlier, I'm finding MP recovery a problem. Although, I am only level 42, and don't have points in Power Wave or Sober Analysis (got shield bash and cannon, only to find out I don't really use or like it).
Dual wield character is starting to feel meh. Feeling behind other players, and constantly struggling. I know it takes time to improve, but still.
Random note, where are the nightmare roars? Just unlocked tomb area, and can't find them.

Not sure why I couldn't add the link for the build, it was marked as spam.
The thread was by Precaria, title of it was "Angelus: MAX DPS MAGE [Staff + Shield Build] (Lv110 Cap)".

Angelus is a dps tank, built to take hits and deliver them, while controlling the enemy with shield skills as interrupts. You won't see much Ampr (Attack mp recovery) with it though, since it relies primarily on mp charge like most mages do to recover mp.

Staves do more damage than magic devices, better for straight up dps, and you can wear shields with them, they sacrifice attack range for this though. However, magic devices, even with longer range, do less damage than staves do with spells, this makes them (currently) most suited for farming materials, which is why so many people have them, and use them.

Dual wield has the best mp recovery in the game on auto attacks, literally twice as much as other classes. I would start working on unlocking and training your combo points once you get a little higher leveled, since every build relies upon combos for the best damage output. Dual wield especially relies on fast combos to move around the map and to deal damage at the same time.

Nightmare roars are in the (third?) room, right before empress.

If I'm being completely honest, the full potential of every build, and every class out there mostly relies upon unlocking the tier 70 skills of snipe, storm, tempest, strike Stab, and triple kick, as well as the tier 90 skills for dual wield of Phantom slash and shadowstep, and then after you've got those unlocked, combo points and understanding how combos work to make your build better or worse.

Thanks Pew pew man and Red_Fox. I'll use MDs for farming, while staff+shield in general then.
@Pew pew man Oh, I always looked at it as a build that avoids MP Charge, since,
/T9MBwKyn (go to pastebin, and add that to the end. Not sure why I can't submit comments with quotes or links).
I always looked at as, 'doesn't really use MP Charge, uses other methods to recover mp' (which is kinda ironic, since how would you get Power Wave if you only going to add 1 point to MP charge?).
The 'other methods to recover mp' is Quick Draw, kiting for MP, or Sober Analysis. Not saying you were wrong, just, that's how I saw the build as.
Does anyone know what's the rate of MP recovery is for Sober Analysis/level?

Sober analysis is pretty crap, not very good at mp recovery, not worth it Imo unless you have extra sp. I ditched it on my snipe for more attack. Quick draw is not always reliable for recovering mp, although it is good, especially if you're spamming 1mp combos and have a large mp pool.

It gives Book of Oblivion, a premium item that resets ALL Skill Trees you've learned. It is a reward obtained by having 20+ hours of gameplay.

Now... If you really want to level fast, you're stuck with Nisel Woods/Bitterness Nuts combo, or complete the Main Quest by fighting all the bosses in Easy mode. To do that, just escape from the battle and set the difficulty to Easy. If you want the farming way, you'll have a hard time finding a paty because nowadays, all the players prefer a party that uses a skill of Magic Skill tree called Storm. Whatever way of leveling you choose, please, don't forget to enjoy the game and...
