For a while now i've noticed my brawler's damage wavering greatly, one moment i would do a 13k heavy smash, and ten seconds later an 80k. I had 90% stability, i attacked in consistant patterns, and i only attacked when the enemies were armor broken, so I was very puzzled, but recently i learned what my problem may be.

So I had never heard of, or seen this before, but I was told that many bosses get a large increase in defense(resistance?) when flinched, tumbled, or stunned, and that breaking bosses parts also did this. After some testing this seems very very likely, and up to this point my brawler has been focused on doing long, powerful combos which rely on flinch and tumble,

So, what I would like to know is, how long do these boss defense boosts last? What can trigger them? and, are they boss specific?
(Aw, i have to MOVE now, so hard!)

Also, I heard that fully breaking just increases drop chance by 10% and breaking usually makes the battle way more than 10% longer! So, is this true?

You actually have a few things going on.

1.) Proration. Monsters have a system where they become stronger or weaker to certain attacks.

Proration damage types are seperated into

    Normal Attacks (Auto Attacks)
    Physical Attacks (Physical skills)
    Magic Attacks (Magic Skills)

    Say a monster has

    15% Normal Attack Proration
    50% Physical Attack Proration
    and 30% Magical proration.

Every time you use a normal attack, the proration damage of a Physical skill used will go up 50% and 30% for a Magic Skill. It will however, make your normal attacks do 15% less damage with each normal attack.

Longer combos aren't good most of the time.

This link http://toramonline.com/index.php?wiki/proration-damage-drop-off/ should provide plenty you with plenty of infornation incase I missed anything.

2.) There are several bosses that have Rage/Defensive mechanics that will occur when they are inflicted with flinch/Tumble/Stun.

3.) Honestly not sure how that works. It boost the dtops far more than 10% from my experience. Depending on the boss, flinch/tumble/stun could make the fight longer. It completely depends on the boss and the scripted behavior it will have at certain hp thresholds. If you're hunting for xtals though, it's usually faster to kill without breaking the boss.

Also heavysmash is not a reliable source of damage NOW, unlike before that a heavysmash rain during loop armor break is feared.

Nowadays, I always pick burst damage triplekick combo over the heavysmash. ^_^

    (1) I was aware that proration was a factor, which was why I mentioned attacking in consistant patterns, I could land the same amount of auto attacks before a combo and get drastically differing damage numbers

    (2) This is really my biggest question here, how long do these defense mechanics last? It seems to occur on most every boss i've fought, so i'd love to know how long the defense buff may last.

I don't think I have anything to add to your 3rd response, so, thanks for the help so far!

If you're in a party with other players, their proration will affect yours as well; this could be the reason you are dealing so little damage.

Ex. If you auto attack 3 times, then use a physical skill, it would deal more damage (+3 proration); however, if you auto attack 3 times, and your teammate uses 5 physical skills, your next physical skill would deal less damage (-2 proration).

You gotta keep in mind what class your partied with, if you want higher damage you could always let them proate first then unleash a combo attack I've done this in mage parties when people got cocky or prorated first and unleashed combos before they can,, it's hard to predict at times you gotta go with the flow of battle you'll get a feel when and when not to execute a devastating blow in battle, once you find the sweet spot you can do it always,,hell I finish Bexis in 39 seconds he gets flinched and tumbled just saying sometimes it's advantagious to use something your not saposed to, I killed ex Bexis with 10 seconds to spare like that.. he had alil too much hp.

Ooh, I didn't know about party proration, that may be it, also I found some information on breaking, breaking can increase the drop rate of specific items vastly, depending on which part you break, and some items are break only, however so far it seems very unlikely that breaking increases xtal drop, all drops might also be boosted 10% with a full break though

Your right about breaking it increases the drop rate, fast kills in pt increase it as well, though people prefer breaking all instead of fast kill, or just do both that's ideal.. theirs info on here somewhere in the archives that tells exactly how breaking increases drop rate it states about xtall chances as well.. it's random but sometimes a xtall pops up faster..
