A rant and search on correct ways of tanking

Question: Is there a guide that describes the correct way tanking?? (Read rant below for details)
Rant: Today, while levelling at Lutaros Cavern with very lovely floating Roars, a person asked me for help in beating a boss whose name I don't remember- But we called him the moon guy. I tried refusing him, but he was persistent, so I thought - 'Alright, even if it's for nothing I'll get a free trip back to Sofya' and decided to help him. But the thing is, moon guy was level 50ish. I was level 38 - A 12+ level difference. I had already almost died because of some weird mobs that just attacked me.
I still tried to tank him- I just learnt the provoke skill, level 1, so I just used that whenever I had MP since I just kept missing everything. My astute skill got me highest 300 dmg. I thought the level 100+ guy in his team will at least do some damage- but he died so many freaking times - Like, once I used the aid akill with MP on him, but he died after just getting up!!! Like. What. The. Hell??? I wanted to scream at him that red areas mean danger, but he just ran to the boss like a bull runs to a red flag.
Is this taking too long?? Let's finish my rant then.
So, I just kept the aggro, used potions and regera and I was able to tank him for 45 minutes. After which that guy finally killed him. Finally. I breathed in and out in relief and relaxed, and ran out of that death-hole. Still, that brings the question on to the topic after that rant of frustration and not so subtle bragging- How the hell do I avoid this??
I expect not being able to do damage as a tank. No problem, come at me, all the 1 damage and 2 damage notifications. But I was missing, and my skills were missing, and the big area attacks were killing my team mates who were standing behind me. I tried hard hit to interrupt his attacks, but even they were missing.....My own health bar had nearly 2500hp and was flickering like traffic lights. It's over now, but I still don't get how I am supposed to position myself to lead those attacks away, and what I can do when everything just misses! And evasion, okay don't get me started on it.

EDIT: Unknown Boss name is found to be Mauez. No, I didn't remember it since my memory is worse than my mental state. That credit goes to @Zufeng for recognizing the boss. Thanks for the hardwork!!

it's ok,everyone started at some point where the game is just brutal,failing or dying is a thing,ranting about dumb casual pt members is casual for a tank.

 

Judging from the name,i believe that boss is Mauez.
Generally,tank job is just to hold aggro so their pt doesn't die.
Second is probably stun (especially if you are farming boss)

What weapon are you using? 1h or knuck tank? Both of these have a miniboss drop weapon that gives 100 crit rate, meaning your attacks won't miss, but can still be evaded. The weapons are Toy Hammer for 1h (dropped by Nightmare Potum) and Drills for knucks (dropped by Moonlight Potum). Mauez does have a second phase (under 50% HP I believe) where he evades all hits for some time.

If you see another character just mindlessly running towards the boss, it's a mercenary (or a very dumb player lol). Mercenaries are computer controlled, and can only auto attack. They can't use skills and doesn't know how to avoid AOEs.

Also know that bosses have an easy difficulty, if you can't beat it on normal, escape the battle and then switch difficulties. This is very useful especially later in the MQ.

Searched that name, and yeah that's our guy. With a robe and a stick with stars on the circles, which light up one by one when he attacks. Thanks for the information!!
I've taken a look at @Kaejuda's recommended guides and saved them. Hopefully that stuffs something in my near-empty brain.

 

lvl 38 is abit too low for good tanking in my opinion, I suggest you try to finish main quest first and reach lvl 125~ after you complete the latest story, that way you would have more stat and skill points.

 

I'm using a 1-handed sword called Adel Sword, and Caravan Shield. Also there's an additional which called crystal earring or something. Armor......I got one from a quest from the shopkeepers wife?? That and Pino gave me a talisman. Those are my equipments.
Also, Is there a way to recognize mercenaries before fighting with anything and without waiting for them to commit suicide??

 

I am using Adel Sword, and about Toy Hammer, let's just say that's far far far......away in the future. Also, I'm doing main quest with my friends, one of them was absent that's why we stopped. We'll resume doing it soon and reach level 125!! (And the skies) I created another mage character when she wasn't there and levelled it up to 36 too!!

 

If you want a good merc you can add me as friend and use mine, it's an attacker merc with 8.9k attack, 10k hp, and both play dead and first aid skills at lvl 10, can 1 hit some easy mode bosses and most mobs too lol

 

Speaking about merc,you can add me if you ever need a tank merc.
I got 130K hp,maxed aid and play dead and 1k atk speed.

Also bit info if you added me.
I routinely delete anyone who haven't logged in for 3 weeks (since that means you have moved on)

What i would have said:
Get toy hammer one way or another, and max Guardian, Tigger slash, P. Def for now, later on depending on your preferences add decoy and/or rampage+berserk for additional ampr. And learn how to time and use p.def efficiently.

If you want an ailment resistant tank then put 200 to 232 points in vit first then after that put all your points into mtl. Assuming that you can, get Jeremiah Mail npc crafted for armor, and either White eyepatch or Mushroom cap for additional gear. These together with 255mtl you will give you 100% ailment resistance and around 20k ish max hp

 

Even at high lv tanking is difficult to get a hang of, and I feel your pain, weak berserker type players can’t do damage to save their life have no hp and are angry with the tank when they die from an aoe attack, all they do is generate aggro, a lot of it xd, sometimes I allow them to get aggro just to see them die, since they are useless alive anyways xd. There is so many times u can interrupt and as for some bosses, flinch and tumble isn’t something you would want to use because it means death for u and your pt. So the tank has the difficult task of learning all boss patterns and knowing how and when to interrupt or defend meanwhile regenerating most.
