Hey I also have a pretty nice idea, but i think most of ppl know it xDD

When u tryna tank, atleast go to the opposite side of ur teammates, like ur members are at the back of boss so the linear red aoes wont interrupt them or some sort xD

    knuckle tank numba wan.

the drills drop near mauez place though,by the potum miniboss, you can get that early than toy hammer.

in my opinion knuckle tank is a much better choice for tanking than sword tank.

disrupting boss skill > aggro generator, there are skills and equip for aggro, don't even need to care much.

also the piercer for knuckle is pretty cheap compared to sword.

in my opinion sword tanks don't need xtal. Why would you 2s your toy hammer?

also in my opinion knuckle tank can't generate enough mp to hold aggro in a party with dps constantly spam high mp skills. If you can't hold aggro, you are not a tank.

Also in my opinion knuckle tank can't mass kill mini boss.

From my eyes, these are the tanks pros and cons:
1h: Standar tank that can handle aggro from multiple boss+has good access to aggro generating skill, but kinda lacking on stun skills
Knuck: Tank that excel at fighting 1v1 and absolute beast when it comes to stuns, but suffers in multi tanking minis due to lack of aoe skill
Bg: Tank that has high aggro skill and range advantage, but extremely weak when it comes to stunning (worse than 1h) and skill may ruin prorate.

? BG tank's aren't worse than 1h in terms of stunning, they both use shield bash from shield skill tree

As long as you have lvl 10 shield bash they all have the same ability to stun, even staff/shield mage with shield bash can do it as well as pure tanks.

There is not much difference between weapons in tanking, really. If you want to minimize physical proration you better use buff skills regardless of your main weapon.
What I love to use to get aggro is 3 skills, warcry, berserk and sanctuary, all of them are buff skills that doesn't affect proration.

Now then, even with the not so much difference what I think is the best tank is 1h sword tank, why? It really depends on your preference, build type and playstyle but 1h tanks have the highest benefit from berserk, lowest def/mdef reduction, longest duration of berserk to actually use the crit boost, so it's possible not to be restricted to crit weapons, 1h swords also offers the best combination of status for tanks, such as ampr, magic resist, ailment resist, or max hp. On easy boss that doesn't require moving around or high mp usage I usually don't use toy hammer, usually I use Sakura lantern sword with 500mp, 5% ailment resist and 20% magic resist. I use seele zauga ring, berserk and meikyo shisui to reach a total of 115 crit to do reliable auto attacks. When Its crucial to do reactive interruption I use toy hammer.

Imo, a tank basically has 2 main jobs, aggro holding, and providing neutral proration from auto attacks. If you can do these two things well then you'll likely be a decent tank.

Now, there is an issue of doing ranged auto attacks on constant moving boss. Out of 3 weapons, bowgun, knuckle and 1handed sword, I think 1handed tank has the best skillset and versatility, why? I'm not talking about the long range decoy of bowgun, Bowgun has a default ranged attack but doesn't have a way to close out on targets instantly since shukuchi range is limited, sword and knuck tank can use power wave to do long range proration, but, knuckle also don't have a mean to do long range proration and also closing out instantly since power wave would reduce shukuchi effectiveness. Then there is 1handed sword tank. There is one skill that can do even better than shukuchi on closing out on targets, that is sonic blade. Even At level 4, sonic blade has 16m range, with instantaneous movement regardless of your range, with max range at 20m at level 10. The stargem is also cheap if you want to save up on sp. So with power wave and sonic blade, the limitation of long range proration finally solved.

And this is my current build on my tank. Yes I didn't put decoy into equation since there is a chance that it will have adjustment . So as a mean of mp recovery I put emphasis on auto attack mp recovery. The job of tanking itself is relatively easy so this much of optimization isn't actually necessary per say. But this is my opinion on which is the best type of tank. The crit gears and xtal such as Sakura fan hair clip, seele zauga and yashiro azuki mom also gives you crit boost so even if you don't like to re-cast meikyo shisui, it's possible to get decent crit and these xtals also provide extra magic & physical resistance so it's a win win situation. Toy hammer and other crit weapon are still very good, and reliable but I'd like to discard the view that a tank has to be restricted to those crit weapons to do proper tanking.

Tl;Dr Sword tank is the coolest!

2nd place would be knuck tank for the most reliable interrupts plus the ranged tumble with sonic wave.

A bit demanding but i think what make tank great is to only move 180° in the front of the boss (moving was fine, but give half the face of the boss to dps player).

Since you are also a beginner, i recommend you to complete main quest with merc, and always do 'easy' difficulty boss.

Watch youtube to see how to tank and gain more information about tank, since i believe trail and error would be a bit difficult (spina is the problem of course). But always remember that it should be only used for reference, never fully copy others build.

The last thing would be to gaining experience it self (boss and miniboss), good luck.

Tried out a mercenary, it takes some Spina but increases with increase in level even if attack or hp doesn't increase and sometimes decreases. It'll be helpful to add you and Aria as a friend, since the no attack power is a big problem when you get straight out teleported to bosses- I thought it'll at least let me choose the difficulty @vanilla_ , but it didn't so I got a free return trip again. I'm finally on track of doing main quest, and it looks like me and moon guy have a second visit planned. I'm aflutter with murderous intentions, honestly. Also, I'll try to gain experience. @Yunan, that long spoiler was extremely helpful so thanks for taking the time to explain it. Even if I can't get buff skills right now, at least I got to know one use of Sonic Blade.
@Zezusa, it seems that tanking is not that easy as being the main damage soaker. I realized that earlier, and even more after reading that. However, the fact that I can just kill players like that somehow makes me excited, somewhat like G. Martin in GoT.
@ayne, that is the plan for the future. However, that future is still being built. Getting near the monster that drops the toy sword right now.......Is just dying many many times. I'll first complete the main quest.

1h, knux, bg, any tank works as long as it does its main job, tanking...

Heck 2hs is a very good candidate for tanking too, due to its huge ampr and aggro generation, and the once so popular gandalf the gay mage/tanks...

all Builds come and go, we'll never know one day MTL tanks will be a thing of the past, just like Fu builds and hybrids...

Tfw everyone is suggesting high end skills and equipment to a Lv38 player. :fail:

If you decided to become a tank from the very beginning then this would be my advice: be frugal with the skills you wanna have in your tank character. Perhaps people don't realize it yet, but Tank builds are quite literally the type of build that requires a indecently huge amount of skill points investment.
There have been many different builds to a tank over the past 4 years, and there are various ways people have set their builds up.

I suggest that you focus mostly on the Knight Skill tree first. Invest skill points mainly on Assault Attack(at least to Lv7 minimum), Provoke, and then work on getting Trigger Slash. These should be the basic skills you should work on at the start.

As for equipment, it's highly unrealistic to be able to get into a random PT to farm for toy sword. You want to either have a few guildmates and/or friends to help you farm for one. Honestly, I think you can make do with just Brutal Dragon Sword or Relic Sword as a low level tank. It's not important when you aren't above Lv100 yet.

Sure, you can just invite me into a conversation and I'll message you my line Id, if you're free. Thanks for the offer, again, it'll be very helpful.
@Kaejuda, even if I had friends that were level 150 and above (I don't, and the three friends on my friends list are around level 50 and below), I'd still be level 44 (Yes, I levelled up) and unable to enter that area with level 100+ monsters. Also, with the main quest levelling me up so quickly, it'll just be a matter of a week for me (if nothing blocks my way and I don't grow lazier) to complete it and get you level 120. That way I won't feel like a odd one out in the party. Still, I'm joining a guild, so if nothing goes wrong I can just ask them.
@Ravelt99, that guide looks very useful. I'm going to read the skills one first, the explanations on Toram suck. Thanks for the help!
@WindSlash, I've just taken some skills in Survival Skills (the boosts), Trigger Slash till level 1, Provoke level 5 and Assault Attack level 1??? (Around that, I don't recall perfectly). And, truth be told, I've been feeling that my skills points are not enough. I don't have Shield Skills (Didn't even buy them, they'll bankrupt me), and my magic skill is only arrow level 1 and charge level 1. I just hope that after levelling up some more I'll have more skill points to work with. I'm just using whatever sword drop I get, (Currently: Adel Sword) and I'll just do that till I complete the main quest since that seems easy. I'll worry about equipment after that.

@Illnoa I'm glad to see another player who is taking Tank class a main. It's rare to have someone specialise in that class and committed to play it properly.
I have a friend who specialises in Tank class and he IS a Tank way back in pc game World of Warcraft. Yes, he is also playing Tank as main in Toram too.
    I used to play 1h-shield semi-tank 2-3 years ago.

If you're interested, I can link you up with him either via Line or Discord.
