So I'm level 42 on my 2nd player, fighting the jelly monster that kidnaps the little kid and previously I was using a Brutal Dragon Armor that I had made from the Sofya Blacksmith and all was fine. I bought a cheap Heaven Feather Garb off the consignment board because it has like 10x as much defense. Now the jelly monster is 1 hitting me, and I'm confused as to why?

No, it doesn't have any stats on it except the main defense of like 178, and 71 potential points or so. Which I know isn't good for late game, but I figured for the main quest it would be fine. The brutal dragon armor only had like 28 defense, and then whatever extra stats you get on the one from the blacksmith.

that's the reason why the brutal dragon armor is better, since you got it from npc blacksmith, there's already stat on it, but the heaven feather armor you bought on cb, does not have any stats on it. You'll need to probably put some stats on it, generally by buying service from another players that offer statting service, or create your own tech blacksmith to stat it yourself.

so the defense really doesn't do all that much, the stats are much more important?

The defense of armors, additional gears, and special gears (or rings) almost don't matter. Mainly cuz def/mdef is a not so useful stat to begin with.

The armor that you can buy on consignment board is always player made (tradable). If there is no stats yet, that means you have to put stats with smith skill's called customization. You can also look for the-already-statted armor on cons board if you search thoroughly. Although the stats may differs depending on who statted it and for what purpose (str arm, full crit arm, mage arm, tank arm, etc.) the armor is used.

So I picked up 2 4th Anniversary Sword IXs that don't have any stats on them either. They did seem to increase my attack damage quite a bit on monsters, are weapons with nothing but their main stat a little more useful than armors are?

Statted and refined gears are better than clean gears.

So should I just get rid of them? They have like 270 attack compared to 40 attack on my previous swords.
I'm a beginner and I don't have much money so it seemed like a cheap way to temporarily boost my attack until I can afford better items.

No, don't. How many potentials does your sword have? I can spare some mats to stat it and refine it if u want, just to help you during early game.

I think each one has 70 potentials. I can get materials and what not, just you have to have a blacksmith character to stat it right? You can't use the NPC blacksmith. How high of a level would I have to get to have a blacksmith that's useful? Thanks for the offer, I wouldn't want to make you bother, I want to do stuff my self.

Err... With current meta, you have to be a lv 190 tec smith to stat a full 19 crit gear. Lv 140 is enough for mage stats.
Also don't worry. I won't stat your sword into the endgame stats as that needs expensive mana mats , but it will be good enough until u can finally sustain yourself in the future until better sword recipe being released.
I'm farming Usami now btw if u want to meet me.

    I'm confused as well ._.
Firstly def isn't completely useless it's only after the 250mark that is. 250def same as 20% resistance. In that regard heaven garb should have been better.

On the other hand if your def was already high then the only defensive stat you had was brutal's 300hp... I can't grasp how that would be enough to avoid one hit. Did you just have barely enough hp with brutal?

I feel as if it could've been certain attacks or maybe your brutal armor was refined. As others have said stats are important but you probably won't be adding hp% or vit on your armors. As for survivability I suggest taking advantage of hp boost, vit stat, ico/orn xtal, hp food buff, refine on armor/add/shield, using hp/resist equips, and/or learning the boss's attacks.. oh and vita plus. Cheap buff that raises max hp. I would suggest npc heaven feather but that requires high lvl. There's probably other alternatives still.

Ooze has one attack that can instant-kill you.
it's a small AoE without delay, where it bites you with it's 2nd head.
this attack deals damage based on your maxHP, so defense doesn't matter here.
refining your armor and add. gear is the only way (at your level) to reduce the damage taken, but you should still avoid it in the first place.
but if you don't see it coming, you will at least not die instantly.

I think that's what it was, the one-hit attack from Ooze, because since I've gone on to other bosses and beaten them while 9 levels below them. Though now I'm on Boss Roga and I definitely need to level up for him, get destroyed in a few seconds. Level 54

Yeah, Roga was the 2nd boss with movable annoying mobs accompanying him. Newbies will find it more frustrating than fighting Ganglef.
