Lol I just found SAO imo to be unique. Well it was the first fast-paced short anime I've seen that even incorporated an eye-catching story-line about a virtual reality that became a "death game" which I gotta say is creative. Almost each episode of SAO sorta left the viewer with a cliffhanger convincing viewers to watch the next episode. Then there's the unique solo-player swordsman protagonist. Not many popular anime protagonists are solo.

As for Kiritos in mmorpgs its sorta funny and a bit sad. Some of these mmorpg Kiritos go solo without understanding why Kirito went solo and just take on the idea that being a solo Kirito is cool.

@RPG_Neko Naruto has energy balls too. Lots of them. xD

No one likes Death Note anymore? xD Trends have changed I guess...
Haven't seen SAO yet, but idk if I should, I'll probably be predisposed to dislike Kirito.

Anyways, this should be on Off-Topic, not General Disc.

No offense but i think your reading way to into this. These are just a whole lot of kids 12 years and lower who thought it would be super smart an cool to call themselves kirito or asuna. Let's initiate a scenario: I'm a 13 year old kid; SOA is one of the 1st and my favorite animes ive seen, I've just installed toram on my phone my first MMO... What should I call myself?

No offense but perhaps you're not reading enough into it. Your scenario only scratches the surface of it. You say they like SAO. Not why they like SAO.

    lolwot, no, I'm not offended.
I'm simply pointing out that your vision of it is narrow. SAO isn't just popular on Toram(although it is quite popular here). The thread asked for an explanation of the phenomena(SAO's popularity) which I provided. Whether it's the/a correct explanation isn't for me to decide.

^Guess I should've explained my last line a bit more xD but yeah you're right @SpeedNin/Iyasuna that Kirito never desired to be solo but took on the "solo-act" to redirect the hate towards the beta testers towards something worst than a beta tester which... he titled himself as.... a "beater"... which isolated himself from the other players, decreased the negative attention towards beta testers and sorta... gave him the bad-ass appearance.

Guess you can describe how most of his "solo-act" actions could be viewed as self-sacrificing and epic?

^Guess I should delete that statement and restate that Kirito made the "solo-act" look heroic and cool compared to other popular anime protagonists.

Im still suprised how no one in toram relates to ANY sort of Accel world character.....that anime had the same developer and had alot more action. Yet it still had the VR feel to it.

Please do excuse my long explanation (^ν^)

On an analytical point of view, SAO does have nice graphics, good plot, somewhat interesting characters, and well drawn fight scenes. It's idea, though not completely original, was still relatively new back in its time of release. Those are all factors that made Sao popular, but what made it really stand out and enter the realm of anime legends?
In my opinion, its popularity branches off our desire to be like the characters, to live in their world.

Of course people would like the concept of SAO. You're trapped in a fantasy world doing anything you could've ever wanted. Sure, there was the constant threat of looming death, but who wouldn't want a world away from school, work, taxes, and nagging parents-- away from reality?
In a way, Aincrad Is the ideal world, especially for teenagers. Who doesn't want a fantasy world to wake up in every morning, a world full of adventure, full of possible romance, of freedom. We all imagine ourselves as the chosen one, saving the world from corrupted evil.
In a way, it stems from our desire to escape our world. We want to be the protagonists because they have some redeeming qualities that makes us want to be like them- someone cooler than ourselves, stronger, more charismatic, someone we'd rather be. That's why I think so many people make their names Kirito, and Asuna. They're strong and brave, leaders of their story.
Who doesn't want to be the main character?

Or I'm just overthinking things like usual and we just make our names the characters names because we like them lol.

I personally think asking why sao is so popular to explain why there are so many kiritos is not the right way to go about it. The reason why there are so many kiritos isnt because there are a lot of sao fans, its because a lot of sao fans play toram.

Lets face it: sao may not be your personal favorite anime, but it is pretty good. Good enough, in fact that, that it inspires some people to start playing mmorpgs. sao makes playing mmorpgs look fun and fans, after watching, think "damn, i know i wont be able to have that exact experience but it looked so fun i wanna try, even if its just on a regular mmorpg." so they whip out their phones and type in mmorpg and whats the first game that comes up? Toram Online. And they download it and theyre not used to playing mmorpgs so they dont choose the most original name out there.

True there are way more popular animes out there: naruto, one piece, bleach, etc. But those dont inspire people to start playing mmorpgs. Sao however, does.

    We need more Shiroe's :V

LMAO at those ppl saying SAO has good plot. SAO is probably one of the shittiest plots among the recent animes. SAO has many strong points that caters the mainstream, but sure as fk, plot isn't one of those.
