Not sure who's idea youre referring to but in the case of mine the fragment of life (equivalent of what you call a "shard" i think) can only be obtained as reward (for example maybe through a chest) after the event is completed so nothing can affect the chance of getting them.

I like Zaks idea best. Having a gauge fill up to release a summon attack seems pretty fun for soloing.
I feel like you should really just have the normal taming method in play, just make it so that you can only catch a boss with a specific cage.
For example to catch Yelb, you should have Yelbs Cage. Masked Warrior? Masked Warriors Cage.
How are the cages built?
Well.. I guess the Xtal of said boss should definitely be one of the requirements. Boss fragments or something can fill in the rest I don't know..

I like the idea of Boss shards (+ purchase an item on store to release the pet from shard) 1 shard can drop from Easy mode, 2 from Normal and so on. But make it you can win the item (or inferior version from darts).
