the king said that they mined the earth under the roots of the eldenbaum tree, but they dug too deep and the black crystal monsters emerged from the abyiss. then the roots snapped and eldenbaum fell down into the hole.
to destroy the monsters they used a weapon that draws energy from the earth and fires it (simcracker?) and the launch of that weapon destroyed the earth. (and caused the cataclysm, it's all the elves fault)

Perhaps that's because of the 'thing' that attached to their armor. Because everytime that 'thing' lost their energy, they retreat. I think it's a Coenubia, but I don't really remember

 

Or maybe is just plot stuff you know...Indeed most bad guys in series could bite the dust with heroes but plot doesnt allow it.
Why does ornlaf can one shot you when you meet all 3 but when you fight him you can beat him?

 

Ive never trusted them on the lord of the rings.
